Motor advice for edge sander
« on: January 30, 2021, 08:30:12 AM »
So my 1.5HP just gave out on my edge sander. It's an older model so can't buy original. Anyone have any recommendations? I have it wired for 220 so even considered going up to 2HP. Lots of choices out and just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts

There is, was, a place in Greensburg that rebuilds AC motors, or they may have something that would work for you.

It may just be the capacitor shorted out.

Did it make a popping sound then smoke?

Back in the 80's we always took our motors to be rebuilt.
I would rather fail at something above my means, than to succeed at something  beneath my means

I agree with these guys, motors are repairable as long as they don't need to be re-wound.

I think you will find it cheaper to just buy a new or used motor. It will probably cost as much to replace as repair.
The business world figured out they made more money by making them cheaper so they don't last as long. and they drove up the rebuild parts prices to force you to buy new. Go get your car starter or alternator rebuilt today. They give you a core price, because they want the, Case, stator and windings back. They throw some new parts in it and then they sell it back to you as a reconditioned unit at almost new prices.
long rant, I buy older 110 motors as I find then and put them on the rack for later.

I got the motor off. May try to run it in tomorrow. If it's just the capacitor it shouldn't be too bad. If it's a rebuild I'll probably just upgrade to a 2HP.

Its real easy to check a capacitor with a multimeter, if you got one. Got to make sure that its discharged though, a large capacitor on a motor can fry your you know what.

Yup all ya gotta do is wet two fingers and lay them on the 2 terminals.

Bingo it's discharged:)

When I was going to tech school, I accidently got my fingers across the secondary contacts of a high voltage transformer.

Ya have any idea what 300 vac feels like?

Maybe that's what's wrong wif me?

Did you go to Rosedale Roy? I always wanted to take an auto tech course or two there, that place has a stellar reputation.
