Thumb Ring Release ?
« on: May 24, 2021, 01:31:01 PM »
Might be something obvious that Im just not seeing but can someone explain what it is about using a thumb ring that dictates the you shoot off the  "other" side of the riser?

The string comes off the thumb ring to the right(for right handed) so shooting off the right side of the bow is appropriate where the string comes off the fingers to the left(for left handed) so the arrow is on the left side of the bow.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

But......you can shoot off the normal side of the bow with a thumb ring too. I’ve played with one a little, and it can be done that way.

You can shoot both sides with three fingers and thumb. But the best is for right handed shooting to put the arrow on left with three fingers and right with thumb. For lefties vice versa. That´s because of the archer´s paradox: When the string leaves the fingers it moves a bit left from three fingers and right from thumb pushing the arrow to bend against the handle in the beginning of the release. If the arrow is on the opposite side of the handle there´s nothing where the arrow could lean and it starts to move out from the handle a bit uncontrolled when leaving the string. Most likely the arrow hits too much right with three fingers and left with thumb if shot from the "wrong" side compared to shooting from "right" side. Again, for lefties vice versa. One can learn to handle that difference but it´s not accident why majority right handed archers shoot from left with three fingers and right with thumb.

The method that interests me is putting a large release loop on. Pull with the thumb through the loop.

Hello:

Since I've not tried thumb rings, I did not understand that some users shoot off the opposite shelf, AND others don't.  Watched some YOUTUBE vid's.

Anyway, what I did HEAR on the vid's was what seemed to be more string release noise. So, in general, are thunb rings more noisy, please?

Thanks,
Kevin Tinny

If you listen to a thumb release and a finger release I don't think the TR is noisier it's just a different sound/pitch. Like with split and 3 under.

I just watched a great video on the tube.
About Mongolian archery....
And they were using thumb rings of course, And they were shooting on the left and right sides.
They mentioned that on Horse back, It's always off the right side, Butt on foot, either side is acceptable....

Thanks Mike. I have been playing around with it with moderate success, shooting off the left side, right handed. Good to see you here again. We are still using a lot of your leather goods. My grand daughter is still using her quiver you made for her.. you carved her name in it for her..really nice. Anyway take care.
