Quiver for Backpack- what I came up with
« on: April 26, 2008, 04:00:00 PM »

Here's what I came up with, I made the quiver from a slat of osage and some thick leather I had. I attached it to the backpack via some fasteners we use at work. It "snaps " off the pack and I plan to make a carry strap that will snap onto the quiver to use as a side quiver when not using the backpack.

Interesting solution! Good hunting.
It's not what you look at that's  important-it's what you see.

Great job!  Where can I find a set of snaps?

Any boat canvas shop will have them. The trade name is "Lift the Dot". The studs in the wood have wood screw type threads. The parts in the canvas itself require a cutting tool that cuts out the hole and the prongs of the snap, but it can be done w/o one using a small hole punch and a small screwdriver to cut the prong slots. Sounds harder than it really is. PM me a message if you can't find them and I'll send you some.

How secure are they?  I may modify my quiver to accept these.

Very secure. They will not pull off in a straight line. The reason they are called "lift the Dot" is, there's a small dot on the outside of the snap itself and stamped the words "Lift the Dot". They will only disengage if you actually lift the dot. Using two of them, you face the "Dots" one up and the other down. You'll rip them out of the canvas before they let go. I use these all the time on boat canvas I make. You'd be amazed at the number of people who call me saying they can't get their covers off. I'll ask "did you read the instructions ? " and they reply "what instructions ? "   "The ones on the snap ! ". Gets them every time.

I would add that these fasteners and others were very prevalent before and after WWII on military equipment. Packs, jeep tops, you name it. Velcro and quick release buckles have taken center stage, but are far inferior IMO.

Very nice idea!  In fact, if I were you, I'd present the idea to someone (cat quiver, GFA, Eagles flight, Vista maybe) and see if they want to make something like that.... great modularity!
