Need a flat finish for snake hides
« on: June 29, 2021, 09:50:39 PM »
Any one found a finish for snake skin that will stay flat but turn water? Just finished a yew self bow and used a couple buzz tails to cover the white back.
I'd post a picture but no kids around to show me how to do it.

I use Tru-Oil on all my bows with and without snake skins. 5 or 6 coats with a rubdown with 0000 steel wool between each. For hunting bows or to just cut the shine of the Tru-Oil I do a quick spray of satin poly over the Tru-Oil.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

Satin Thunderbird bow finish. Best finish I've used for looks and durability. It's not 100% flat, but it doesn't shine either. If it glared, I'd be using Tbird flat instead, but it doesn't. No steel wool, rubbing compound or rottenstone needed to affect it after the final coat. It makes for a good looking, durable, waterproof, and non-glare hunting bow.

I put satin Spar urethane over multiple coats of Tru-oil to waterproof and cut the shine.

Same as bowjunkie. I hand rub in a couple of coats of gloss for durability and then finish with satin spray.

Thanks, it was good advise. I'm shooting the bow in now and hope to use it this fall.
