Dynamic Spine by inches - Gold Tip Traditionals
« on: August 06, 2021, 04:39:43 PM »
In anticipation of the coming season (a few weeks away here), I'm fiddling with my setups and would like to bump my total arrow weight up.  I added some weight to my Gold Tip Trad 340s by stuffing some weedwacker line down the nock end.  It rattled around in the quiver but I was happy with how it shot at over 700 grains total weight.  That is, until the line and the nock came launching back my direction after hitting a hard 3D target.  The shot was good but that's a terrible way to stump shoot.

Toward the same goal, I'm now thinking about chopping the length back & screwing in heavier heads.  But the 3Rivers calculator I'd normally consult to get a ballpark is having some kind of issue.  The dropdown menus don't have any options to select.

So does anybody have a sense of how much spine is gained by chopping these arrows?  I know that I want a static spine at or around 65, which is where the arrows are at now.  So I just need a rough idea of how much to chop if I replace the 125 grain heads with 200 grain heads (100 grain brass inserts for total point weight of 225 now and 300 with the heavier heads).

Or a good replacement calculator option would be helpful as well.

Your numbers don't calculate on my newest Stu Miller spine calculator.  What arrow length?  Where are you getting a 65# spine number?

Current length is 31.5".  More like 32" to the throat of the nock though.

Hmmm.  Afraid i can't be of much help, but a static spine of .340 equals about 93#, according to the way Easton measures spine.  Given the arrow length, point weight, etc., your dynamic spine might be closer to 65#.

Regardless, you might just need to sacrifice an arrow to arrive at the combination you want.  Given that you have enough excess arrow length to start with, might shorten one by a quarter inch, add the weight and see how it shoots.  If not stiff enough, might shorten it by another 1/4-inch.  Repeat as necessary, but I doubt you'll have to cut off more than a half inch to accommodate an additional 75 grains in point weight.  In fact, before you do any cutting, I suggest you try the heavier point weight on one of your existing arrows.  It just might work.

I say that because even though there is an optimal spine for every bow/arrow/shooter combination, most bows will shoot a range of spines quite well.

If you like the way the arrows flew with the weed eater string but some weight tubes from 3 Rivers. If you cut them exact they won’t move in the shaft and rarely push out the nock. You could put some hot melt glue on the nocks also. I shoot mostly wood but I do shoot carbons for hogs some have weight tubes. I’ve never had the tube or nock come out on a shot at game and very rarely stump shooting. May be quicker solution than cutting down your shafts. The tubes do not change the arrow spine I’ve spined them on an Ace spine tester they made 0 difference. If you see a spine change from an arrow tube it’s in your head lol.
