coyote howler locator

Anybody use a coyote howler to locate gobblers. I was thinking about trying one, but didn't know if it would have a negative effect on the turkeys by scaring them, thus avoiding my location. I live in PA if that is helpful. Thanks, Sam

Don't have the experience with it, but I would use an owl called before I would a coyote. I have heard good things about the owl call.
My first thought would be they may be apprehensive about getting on the ground, knowing that coyotes come from ground level, but if they have thick cover to walk through, with the now call they may be more willing to use that cover on the ground.
And with any call, rather its owl, or a turkey gobbler call, don't overcall

coyote calls work well, I now use a goose call as a locator. Works great also.

Yep! That's my favorite locator. Down here all I hear others using is an owl or crow. The coyote gives me something different.

A friend of mine who was involved with the turkey reintroduction in this area had a novel way of locating toms. He would park the car and before he shut his door he would reach in and honk the horn for about two to three seconds. Every tom in the area would sound off.

Wslnwings, you echo my thoughts. I live in a heavily hunted area. The turkeys have heard everything a million times. I was just thinking something new might make them a little more vocal. Didn't want to scare them though. Thanks, Sam

Coyote hunting is my passion. One evening I slipped into a productive spot and gave a lone howl. A flock of turkeys nearby all flew up into the trees. But that was just before dusk, too.

If you decide that you might want to use that caller someday go with "The Dog Talker" by Critter Buster Game Calls out of PA. I got a foxpro electronic game caller which is supposed to be the best and it doesn't match the realism of the hand call.

when we were in the woods the other day, the toms were going crazy over a woodpecker and shot gun blasts. they kept gobbling every time a shot went off in the distance. the woodpecker, however, I think intimidated them after it kept hammering faster and faster. It sucked because they were coming in to where we were setup. i think they just respond to any loud sound, thats why they call them shock calls. but too many shocks will make them split.

I use a howler to roost birds, it seems to work much better for me in the evenings than it does in the morning. +1 on the goose call it works great in the mornings.
