Right kind of flooring?

Is this the right orientation for solid bamboo flooring to use for grinding lams from.

If you lay a pc on a table and look at the end it should have vertical glue joints usually about 1/8” to 1/4” apart , vertical boo

I can’t really tell from the pic
Stay sharp, Kenny.

This stuff is horizontal.    Do you think you could glue up a stack then turn it 90 degrees to cut vertical lams?

the one on the right is what you want .
Most of the ones on the left only have bamboo on the top layer

I will have to confirm if it is solid bamboo.  I work for a big box lumber store. Someone ordered 224  cases when they wanted 224 pieces.  I’m think the price might be really good to sell off the left over 5 pallets.

I sell the correct bamboo for making tapers and parallels... Definitely cheaper and with less waste than flooring.

That’s not a bad idea Jim.  I will probably get you to bring some to TBOF in the spring.  Every time I have bought bamboo the freight was as much as the product

I was given a case of the horizontal flooring by a contractor who had extra after a job. I sliced off the tongue and groove, put it through the thickness planer to remove the finish on both sides, then ran it through the drum sander to remove the shine from the planer. I laminated a stack up to 2” thickness and after curing sliced it on the side to get my laminations, edge grain. It did provide a useable product, but there were several downsides.  Under the top layer of bamboo there were often gaps in the layup that you wouldn’t see till you started slicing. The bamboo used is often heavily toasted to give it that warmer tone and that might compromise its strength. Laminations would often separate along the factory glue lines. I had to re-sharpen the planer blades after cutting off the finish. It required a great deal of glue and a lot of work.  I don’t think the finished product was remotely up to the standard of what you would get from Jim .  Really nice flooring though!

Noah, I had exactly the same plan till I pulled a piece out of a box last night.  I saw the gaps you were talking about, that ended it for me.
