Rebound
« on: January 01, 2022, 10:14:15 PM »
A bit of a noob question...
Of the bows I've built (8 or so on 4 different forms), I've noticed that every bow rebounds a bit when it comes out of the form. Not talking about a ton, but at least 1/8, or as much as 1/4 inch at the tips.

Is this normal for glass backed bows?

If not, any ideas on the cause?

Thanks much, Ted.

I think a little rebound is normal. How much kinda depends on how severe the curves are.

Leave the bow under pressure until the bow and form have completely cooled after removing from hotbox. This has virtually eliminated rebound for me.

Its called "set" and all bows take some off the form or after being used. After introducing artificial tension and compression to the materials, they want to return to their neutral state.

Like said, it's normal.

More and thinner lams is supposed to help also.  Sounds reasonable to me but I have only built one with more than the usual 4 and 2 glass...

Thanks Kenny.

Do you think hit cure vs cool cure would make a difference?

Not sure but doubt it, hearing is supposed to give more heat resistance but not sure on strength
