String advice on Abbott longbows + new Question
« on: January 18, 2022, 12:28:57 PM »
Looking to all you Abbott longbow shooters. I just got a Steve Abbott longbow, and was wondering what type of string would be best/safe for his bows? B50/55 or some type of Fastflight (D-97) with padded loops. The bow is 46#@26, if using B-50/55 what would be the recommended strand count for the bow string?

Thanks, Alan

I would go 12 or 14 strand on the B-50/55.I would try and get the right serving size with the strand count you choose to fit the arrow nocks you like.

I shot an 8 strand SBD Silent But Deadly flemish twist bowstring on my Abbott.

B50 or B55 would always be safe. Steve made longbows for many years, transcending the change from Dacron to Fast Flight. I would guess any bow he made post 2000 would be safe for Fast Flight, although I don’t know exactly when he made the change.

One of our club members had a few of Steve’s bows. I remember him using FF with padded loops. Another club member made the strings. He shot Kramer bows with same type of string makeup. I am thinking late 90’s? Steve made some pretty bows back then.

I use a 16 strand B55 on mine which is 62@30. You probably won't like the bow, might want to just send it my way and I'll take care of it for you!

Thanks for all the replies on string materials and strand count. I have one more string question for all you Abbott longbow owners. What was Steves recommended brace height for his bows, and what brace height do you guys use on your bows? I usually like to use a little lower BH on my longbows, they seem to shoot a little better for me.

Thanks, Alan

Mine likes between 6.75 and 7 inches. It's 66 inches long if that helps.
