Checkering tools for a newb

I want to try my hand at doing my own checkering . Some files are 100 some 15. Idk whats what and just lookin for some insight.

Sorry, I don't have any good advice. My only checkering attempt was on a pair of home made pistol grips. It requires a lot of patience and repetition. I would recommend buying some reasonably priced tools and spend a bit of time practicing with them. For me a straight edge starting point was critical. I am amazed at the skill it takes to do complex curves, which I am sure would be found on any bow riser

Stippling might easier and you can do it wiyh a dremel tool and burrs.

Matt,checkering files are for metal.Wood checkering uses different types of cutters.As a beginner,you don't want to start checkering too fine.About 16-18 lines per inch would be right.You can find those tools where gunsmithing supplies are sold.I would get a basic book on checkering and look up some videos.From there,buy a few basic tools and practice on some spare,hardwood.Laminated woods aren't the best for checkering but I have seen it done.Some tropical hardwoods will accept very fine checkering.Again,for a beginner,16- 18 lines per inch would be a good starting point.

Dembart and Gunline make some good tools for hand checkering.

Checkering is an art form that i have never pursued primarily because of the time involved and tools needed. I've known a few guys that were rather good at it, but it took years to master the  woodcarving portion and the right tools to do the checkering is very important.... Very sharp tools too....
