What to do with a delaminated bow?
« on: February 26, 2022, 08:07:34 AM »
Years ago I bought a nice looking Bear Grizzly online.  On about the 3rd pull it delaminated near the fade outs on the upper limb.  I am looking for ideas on why to do with the nonfunctional bow.  Door handle? Just hang above a door? ??????

I save them, and when I make a knife or have one built I use the wood in the riser.

In our club, we have a snack bar named “The Broken Arrow Saloon.”  The sign is decorated with broken arrows that come and go over time.  I can imagine a broken bow decorating a club snack bar named “The Broken Bow Cafe” (or something).

Hold your breath over this: About 12 years ago, a local guy brought me bow that he built in high school shop class from a kit for a bow string. The limbs were barely tillered, almost an inch and a half wide at the tips. The string grooves looked like they hacked in with a dull pocket knife,(the reason he needed a new bow string), the riser and the limbs had sharp unsanded edges and it was twisted. Two weeks later he brought it back in almost three pieces. He borrowed it out and whoever got in a wrestling match with it while stringing it and it blew up. Top limb hanging on with a bit of fiberglass and the bottom limb separated about 8". I added a couple of pin size bits and several syringes with super small needles. I fit it together kinda sorta and made a form. I drilled little holes along and at the ends of the breaks as best i could guess, then laid a layer of glue and injected glue into the  tiny holes and wrapped it into the form. Then tossed it into my portable ice fishing shack with a heater blowing into it. Two hours later turned off the heat and let it all sit in the hot sun until night. Then I cleaned the thing up and trimmed the limbs way down, did a complete re-work of the grip and riser and tilled it to 1/8".  What I ended up with was a 35 pound bow that was aligned and shot pretty soft. It is still together and shootable today. But I would never try that again.
If that Bear has that impregnated riser wood, do NOT toss it into a fire and breath in the smoke. Careful when selvaging the riser wood with a band saw, listen to Biden and Fauxi wear a mask, that saw dust is no good for your lungs.

You might be able to trade it to someone who makes knife scales. Especially if it has the coin. There’s a couple guys on the FB group Tradation Bear Archery that do.

I had a customer that shot his new bow in his basement ,the first shot the top limb hit the rafters and shattered it . I cut out the riser section and made a staff for a pedestal mount for a deer looks cool
