Arrow Spine Recommendations.
« on: February 14, 2022, 01:08:58 PM »
Going to pick up my first recurve tomorrow. I’ve been shooting compounds for over 35 years and I’m finally going to try my hand at a recurve. I ordered a Hoyt Satori with 35 lb limbs and was wondering what would be a good spine arrow to get me started. Not sure on draw length, compound I shot 28 inch draw length(with release). Any suggestions? Thanks Warren

If you make your own, wapiti archery tapered, matching the eye of the grain to the throat of the nock, 4 fletch 4" 125 grain head, 40-45 28 to 29 inches back of point for that Hoyt. If I am wrong go to 145 grain heads.

Not real familiar with the Satori, but I am thinking it is cut well past center and may be that the side plate is adjustable. I would think that a 600 spine would be in the ballpark, and I would start off full length with some different weight field points. Also guessing that your draw length will be 1"-1 1/2" shorter than your compound. My experience with carbon arrows has shown me that length to the back of point has a greater effect on spine than does point weight.
As an example, I have been working up an arrow for my 42# and 44# (@27") recurves. The 44# bow shot the best with a 400 spine shaft cut to 29" with a 12 grain insert and a 250 grain field point. A 500 spine shaft flew weak with points from 250 grains all the way down to 125 grains. I started cutting the 500 spine shaft down 1/4" at a time and when I reached 28", the flight straightened out with point weights from 175 up to 250 grains.
BUT for right now, just find a shaft and point weight that flies to where you are looking and work on proper form. Watch some videos on proper form and take a look at the Shooters Form Board here on this sight and pay close attention to Terry's Form Clock. Have someone record you with your phone so that you can see what you need to work on. Good Luck!

I think your Satori will like .800 spine shafts, and 100 grain points.  In the Gold Tip Ultralights, that would be a .700, because they don't offer an .800, but that's close enough. For a 28” DL, you should cut the shaft to 29”.  If you go with Victory VAPs, you can get a .800 spine shaft, and. 110 grain glue-in point, which will be approximately equal to a 100 grain point plus insert in the Gold Tip.  The Victory VAPs are the better choice with your setup, but they are somewhat more expensive and not as versatile as the GT's with inserts.

Your choice will be between shooting off the provided shelf rest or putting on your own cushion plunger and elevated rest.  I went with the cushion plunger and elevated rest for a while until I got tired of it, and now I’m enjoying the heck out of shooting it off the provided shelf rest.
