Just a knifemaker question

I love a good knife, but I'm a stickler for one thing in particular, a guard.   I have very little interest in a knife without one.  Now, that being said, why do so few makers put them in their knives?  There has to be a reason.  It sure limits my buying options.

I and a lot of makers do make them, along with many other styles. It does raise the price for my blades, for me it is a lot more work involved. Some guys just don't want to spend that much, and prefer other styles. I do see a ton of guys making them, hidden tang with guards. Go to a big knife show you will see.

Big River X2. When I put a guard on a knife, it raises the price quite a bit. I prefer them on a knife If I am making one for myself. Everyone is different though, some people feel like they are a necessity, some feel the cost is not justified and can do without them.

When I have  my arm up to my elbow in gore I really prefer knowing my hand can't slip up on the blade.

The best answer may be that external guards are not necessary when handle design is adequate for retention.  Adding a guard adds complexity and labor which increases the cost.  While they are indeed beneficial and in some patterns necessary, they aren't a go/no go issue for an otherwise well made design with good ergonomics.
