Cracked bow tip…fixable?
« on: April 20, 2022, 09:29:11 AM »
So super bummed to find my bow tip cracked. Its a Northern Mist Ramer. Not sure how it happened, but the only explainable scenario in my mind is the tip got pressed against a door that was being slammed. So not exactly smashed in a door, but by a door.

What are options as far as fixing?

Does the crack open up with a little persuasion? If so you might be able to shoot some low viscosity epoxy into the crack with a 28ga needle. Or you could get the tip very warm and dip it into a tube full of same type epoxy and let it wick into the crack.
Hope that its not a flaw built into the bow. Cant picture a scenario where a door does that, unless the bow was being used as door stop.

Definitely not a problem built into the bow - my own fault. I can tell Steve at Northern Mist does an amazing job. The crack doesn’t open very easily and it’s actually two separate cracks, which tells me it was blunt force trauma. The door stop analogy is actually exactly what I think happened. I’m going to see what Steve at Northern Mist says. Hopefully he can fix it or some other experienced bowyer.

I have a bow that was dropped in shipping and the tip took the impact and looked very much like that. After discussing it with the bowyer and agreeing to try something first, I used the Super Thin CA glue, forced it open and used the Super Thin stuff.

It has held with no issues.  WARNING! The Super Thin is thinner than water! A little will go everywhere!

I have not used CA and epoxy together, but if it's working for Hillbilly, I'd give it a shot.
I do use this stuff and it is super thin! They claim it wicks into a .002 gap.

I am wearing my glasses and zoomed in a little...  I think I see something not so good??...I think the back fiberglass is cracked or broken?? I see the tip is toast and needs replacing too. The belly glass may be compromised too. If glass is broke you may have to pike both ends.. it will shorten the bow and you will pick up a few pounds of draw weight.

I really hope you’re wrong. I talked to Steve and he recommended thin ca glue and some clamping. He saw the pics, so hope his recommendation is right. Ill post back when done

I can only see pictures you posted. The pictures are pretty good quality. You have the bow and can look at it in good light. Can you see a crack thru the glass in the string groove? the tip overlay is cracked in the string groove and will cut your bow strings, so the overlay should be replaced. Is there a crack in the glass on the belly side of the bow tip?

After looking at the good close up pictures, Robert is correct, that tip is compromised beyond safe repair, if your not comfortable piking it yourself maybe the bowyer can do it for you, I believe it's your only safe option.

I have not read all the posts and I don't know if anyone mentioned it...  If the draw weight is not too heavy and the damage is not too far down the limb you could pike the limbs...  It may gain around 5 lbs...
