Kind of overdoing it?
« on: July 21, 2022, 12:45:02 PM »
Since I started shooting again after a year and a half layoff, I've been trying to "get my mojo back" by flinging 50-60 arrows every day (or every other day). And now I'm experiencing some sore muscles (knots, feeling strained or 'pulled') in my back and shoulder as well as my wrist. I realize I am probably overdoing it (again) but wondering if I need to shoot fewer arrows per session, shoot less often, or drop to a lower draw weight until my shooting muscles get back into better shape? Or, all of the above?
What would you guys recommend? :archer2: :archer2: :archer2:

I think a person needs to shoot the number of arrows required for whatever event the person is practicing for. For hunting, only one or two accurate arrows are required per day when actually hunting, and maybe a dozen for practice, so 20 arrows every other day out of your hunting weight bow should be sufficient to keep in shape for hunting.

I have to shoot 100 arrows in a day in some of the tournaments I enter, combining practice and tournament shots, so I better be able to shoot that many out of my tournament weight bow.  The problem is, I don't think it's good for me at my age to shoot that many arrows outside of a tournament, so I sort of use the same rule I used to use when running marathons: if you can run an 18 mile practice run, you can run a 26 mile marathon.  This is about 70%, so I figure that if I can shoot 70 arrows in a practice session, I should be good for 100 arrows in a tournament.  I like to shoot every day, so I shoot about 50 arrows every day, and 70 or more at least once a week.  Of course, I’m never going to be a “contender” at this rate, but my objective is just to be able to stay in the game and enjoy it.  It has worked so far!
