New Tradition
« on: October 20, 2022, 06:32:35 PM »
For the last 5 years I have always taken a day off from work to go hunting on Halloween. Opening day is always crowded where I go and the weather seems to be getting warmer each year. But Oct 31st is perfect. What are some of your traditions? I don't get to go out as much as I like to but the 31st always seems to be a good bet.

Years ago, you only got one tag in NY.
You could take a Buck or Doe during Archery Season, but you still only got one tag.
My first year deer hunting, I killed a doe opening weekend. I was done for the year.
My second year, I killed a button buck on the second weekend. Again, done for the year...
I was 18 before I was able to gun hunt with my Dad and family. After that, it was Bucks Only for me!!

Last 20 years or so, my tradition has been, Does get a pass untill after the Rut.
They're Mother Nature's "Buck Bait"!!!
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

I usually eat the tenderloins fresh.  Many times I eat them alone.  Sometimes I'll share with friends.  Like this year I shared the ones I took out of the two I killed up on the KennyM lease.  But Texas doe aren't huge and neither are the Tloins.  So most often they are a meal for myself.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

I always go out Thanksgiving morning.  Have been doing that since I was 12 years old.  Been a few years when I couldnt do it, (when I was in the Army or visiting relatives) but it is a tradition I do every year.  Even my son in law goes with me and soon my grandson will tag along.  Just makes that day more special.

A friend always said, "You gotta be in a treestand on Veterans Day".

Like Brently,  my father in law and his cronies always hunted small game Thanksgiving morning.  I picked up on that tradition and do the same. And it's gotta be with a longbow. Don't know why, but a longbow and back quiver just feels right.

I have my "Traveling Pants", an old pair of faded green dress pants I wear every year during the 12 hour trip to hog camp. Thirteen years and counting............  They really don't bring me luck but it can't hurt.

I hear ya Woodchucker, I had a doe that was so tiny come by my stand I thought it was a rabbit. Needless to say I let her pass.
