Not saying it can’t be done, but you will be under spined. The more point weight you add the weaker it’ll get.

For a generic, center-cut, recurve of that specification the dynamic spine would be around 53. To have gold tip 500's with the 74 grain inserts match would be around a 75 grain tip. If you bump to the 400 spine you'd be able to run a 150 grain tip and match the dynamic spine. Of course your personal form and release with play a big part of it but those weights should get you in the ball park. If you find a head or tip you like you can play with the inserts and adding weight. With the 500 spine your limited.

I think some 500's cut to 30" or so with 125 gr up front is 'about' where you may settle in.
Everyone's release, how heavy an arrow they want to shoot, centercut and setup there, is a bit different.
400's would be too stiff IMHO unless maybe they were full length.

I'd start bareshafting with some full length 500's with 125-150 field points and start taking off about 1/2" at a time till the shafts start to turn over.
You can pick up a couple from places like Lancaster for $7-8.00 each or if you have some extras laying around in your closet somewhere.

I had sort of quit posting on threads like this because I would get so irritated. I'm not trying to be a know it all or talking about anybody that posted on this thread, but I see it all the time where people say it should work, and they are not shooting that set up though.

You might get a full length 400 to work with a real heavy tipped full length arrow to work, but a 500 is so much more versatile.

It's drizzling rain pretty hard here, but I just had to go out and test my theory here. I haven't shot this bow in a year, went and grabbed some arrows 30.5 inches long, and the bow is the weight you are talking about. I guessed at a 200 grain tip and that's three shots with perfect flight.

I would do like Southpaw said and get a test kit.

I've got several bows in the 40s that like a 500 spine arrow. I draw 29.5 inches so these bows pull 44, 46, and 49 pounds at my draw length. Obviously center cut and what-not factors in as well, but each of those bows bareshafts perfect with a 31 inch 500 spine with a 200 grain point, a 125 grain point, and a 145 grain point respectively.

IMHO-500 spine, full length with 125gr.-150gr., would be just about right for your bow. If you still have doubts, get a test kit with 400-500, or just get a half dozen of 500s.

you will get a lot of good answers from a lot of people, but i firmly believe that the center cut of your bow will be what determines the spine that your particular bow likes. when you get close on spine selection, there are ways to fine tune the dynamic spine from there: shaft length, point/insert weight, building out your side plate and believe it or not string silencers. i was bare shafting my latest longbow, and went from a weak spine to a stiff spine with the same arrow just by adding beaver ball silencers, and now i will move the silencers closer to the limb tips to weaken the spine a little more, if that don't weaken the spine enough, i will put on lighter silencers. i actually find this tuning stuff kind of fun.
caught between:If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it and can’t leave well enough alone.

As others have said and demonstrated, a 500 shaft with a 125 grain head and standard aluminum insert should be just about perfect.  400s will be too heavy unless you really front load them -- 300 grains or more.

This quote is spot on.....  Those 500's will tune just fine at those specs on most any kind of bow.

Thats reasonably close to my Caribow longbow set up. 49@28 with 29 1/2 500's ... I shoot 160 or 150 grn heads standard inserts. I've tried 400's and they are too stiff without more dinking around than I want to do. I have shot that set up for many years now.  :archer2:
