String for Bill Price Longbow or Doug Knight Recurve
« on: May 13, 2008, 10:42:00 AM »
While I read a few posts on B50.  Could any tell me what strings folks have had good luck with on Bill Price Longbows?  I know he passed a few years back or so...or I'd go to the source.

Also, have a older recurve from Doug Knight out of Oregon.  Any have preference to strings for his recurves.

Thx in advance, Brian

Brian:
can't help with the longbow but I am familiar with the Knight Bows.  Use B50 dacron only as the limb tips had hardwood inlays and overlays only. Fast flight will eventually wear on the woods and expose a sharp edge of the glass inside the string groove cutting the string or worse yet splitting the glass.
Use a brace height of 7 3/4" from grip instep to front of string for starters, May get by with as little as 7 3/8".  They usually start getting noisy down there however and you have to really keep an eye on string stretch so as it doesn't go lower.  Bad arrow flight and noise are the first signs of a to low brace height

Sure wish Doug Knight would build bows again. But understand not doing it as well.

Doug,

The info is much appreciated coming straight from the "man".  I assumed B50 would be the answer and it shoots just fine with it.  My brace height is closer to 8" so I'll back it off a bit and see what happens.  I feel very priveleged to be one of the few to own and shoot one of your fine bows.  I bought it used at Ted Fry's shop over 10 years ago.  Some coincidence that the two connections to this bow for me answered the thread.

Thanks to the both of you!!!  Brian

Thx Mike,

I just bought a string of B50 and noticed some handshock that I hadn't before.  I'll get a FF string made asap.  Also, it was a sad day to read of Bill's passing a while back.  He's been missed by many.

Thx, Brian

Bill produced a few CD's he was a good signer and a very good story teller....
At the shoots we usualy put are boots close together....
At times I like to play his Music while I work out in my shop....
I'm not much of a picture taker, At a shoot in Roseville one year I ask my Uncle to take a picture of Bill and I together....A year are to after he passed....
    I miss him...........
