Straight stick bow riser came unglued - help
« on: June 24, 2023, 02:32:27 PM »
I was given this straight stick bow, AMO 68 inches stamped 53 on the limb. It was given to me by somebody who bought it at an estate sale and kept it in their closet for several years. He never shot it. It appears to have bamboo on the back and the belly I don’t know if they had taken care of it, or how it needed to be taken care of, oil or wood conditioner etc . I took it to an archery shop where they put a stringer on it and started pulling on it very gently the riser came unglued from the main part of the bow. I glued it back on thinking that I just wanted to display it at this point. what are the chances that I would be able to actually shoot it , is there a Bowyer that I can send it to that will take a look at it thanks.

Biggest question is what glue did you use.    Did you clean the joint, or just squeeze something into the cracks?  I see a leather wrapped handle which doesn't appear to have been disturbed.  Did the whole riser/handle come unglued/separated, or just the fades pop loose?

Just the fades popped up and I squeezed glue into it without cleaning it. I thought it was probably ruined and I just wanted to display it at this point now after re-thinking I sure would like to shoot it.

WHAT GLUE?  Cyano-acrylate ("super glue")?  Titebond?  Elmers rubber cement?  Hot glue stick?

If the glue job is good, you should be able to spiral-wrap the fades down from the handle to the limb and a 1/2" beyond, with artificial sinew, silk embroidery thread, or something similar; then saturate that with epoxy to glue it down.  The bow should then be useable.
