MI, bear hunting, have points need help
« on: May 14, 2008, 08:39:00 PM »
I am looking for any one who can help me pick an area in MI for this falls bear hunt, I currently have 5 points and should be able to draw several areas. If any one is going, or knows of some one who can help bait, or a group of guys going, could you let me know whats up?

Newberry is a good area from what I've heard...check past results and see what have had the greatest numbers taken.  I have a friend that lives to bear hunt Michigan and should have some stats.  I'll check with him tomorrow and see what he thinks.

With that many points the sky is the limit...you can plan your hunt.

I took some bears very near the Misery River - and very near Toivola. That was 25+ years ago !!

If I had the time and money I would choose the Baraga Unit in the western UP.  That said I always pick the Newberry unit because that's where my cabin is.  You might want to check out some Bear Outfitters up there(Google "Mich. Bear Outfitters") The other thing is the 1st season is the best if you're baiting, the Hound hunters cannot run their dogs the 1st 5 days or so.

I second Mr. Butler on the unit.  I have a buddy that lives just outside Baraga/L'Anse and he sees bigguns all the time.  Another friend of mine shot a 475lber near Escanaba last year using an outfiter and hounds.

The only bear I ever saw in Da UP eh, was on the NMU campus when I dropped my son off the first day. Don't think you can hunt there though.

If you go to the Michigan Bowhunters Assoc. website and ask on there to speak with Al Trainer who lives on the western side of U.P. He knows alot about bear hunting in the U.P.
