Real hunting adventures Scenario #3
« on: July 25, 2023, 07:08:55 PM »
Hunting scenario #3:  Location: Idaho  Tags: Elk, deer, bear, wolf, and cougar    Early Saturday afternoon after scouting for elk, one
week before opening day. I decided to try and call for coyotes. I heard them howling earlier in the morning. I was sitting
against a fallen tree. After a series of calls about 3-4 minutes, I caught movement to my left, coming out of the Christmas trees at
45 yards, a black bear proceeded down the game trail toward me. With the wind in my face and fully camouflaged, he slowly
approached a distance of 12 yards, then stopped. Deciding whether to go up the hill around the tree or down the hill. Then after a
couple seconds, he slowly began walking down the hill closer towards me.   What do you do?

Do you have a separate tag for bear, or if you use it does that burn your deer or elk tag?  If it does, scare the bear away.  If not, shoot the bear.  :bigsmyl:

Can't use the bear tag because it's a week before the season opens.

Hopefully the bear just passes by.

As a non-resident I would celebrate I even had a tag for your chosen area.  For the last 2 years my brother and I have been unable to purchase non-resident OTC Idaho tags for my chosen area despite being online to buy them as soon as they went on sale.  :banghead:

Pure and simple; seamlessly step into self defense mode, hope he doesn’t see you but be prepared to protect oneself.

Bear spray is amazingly effective.

Drop the bow, and grab your knife....

A former TradGang member (Joe Skipp) killed a Grizzly with his recurve years ago, that attacked them while he was on an Elk hunt. He spent 10 days in jail before they ruled it a self defense kill.
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

There is a fine line between Hunting, & Sitting there looking Stupid...

May The Great Spirit Guide Your Arrows..... Happy Hunting!!!

The bear slowly moved forward to around 8 yards and that was more than close enough for me.  With the least amount of
movement, I picked up a large heavy pine cone and hit him in the face while barking as loud as I could.  He turned and ran off up
the hill. I laughed and thanked God for the experience.  Just another day in the woods.    5   :archer:
