2024 black bear suggestions

Looking to do a black bear hunt next spring. I have hunted them with Weitas Creek outfitters in Idaho several years back and they are awesome. Looking for input on trad friendly black bear outfitters for 2024. I have some alaska airline miles to burn so somewhere out west would be nice. Weitas creek was a top notch operation and would use them again. I hunted the fall camp but would like a spring bear hunt this time. Any input?

Hello Jim,

     Are you open to hunting in Canada? If so, Stickflingers in Western Manitoba is hard to beat. I’m sure they’re booked for 2024. Being just one hunter, there’s a good chance there will be a cancellation due to the number of tags Ryan has. We hunted there in 2022 and we are going back June of 2024. The hunting is great, and Ryan knows how to set up guys for traditional archery gear.

Stickflingers. Been there three times, I saw twenty plus bear at my stand each year.  Plus I had a chance at Pope and Young Bear each year. He also has a lot different color phase bears.

Ryan Derlago is a trad bow hunter and understands what is needed for successful bear hunting.

I should have added I was able to hunt four different stands the last time I was there.
Also, Stickflingers provide the stands already in place. Not so with other outfitters.
Also, transportation was provided to the stands by the guides at Stickflingers.

I have been to Ontario twice and both times I was required to bring my own treestands. And that’s ok, but much nicer to not have to do that. Don’t get me wrong, I had a great time hunting in Ontario and there were good camps as well, just different. And as far as transportation I used up almost a tank of gas traveling to the stands during each week of hunting Ontario.

Ryan doesn’t scrimp on bait. There may be a differences of opinion on how much bait to use, but you can’t argue with Stickflinger’s success.

So, final thought- be sure to ask what is expected of you and what you get for your money.

Excellent info guys, thanks. Not seeing anything for Gypsy lake outfitters except fishing lodges. Do most people drive to stick flingers? It looks like it is 6 hours North of Winnipeg?

Yes that is correct. However, if you are coming from the west you can turn at Rugby ND and go north through the Peace Gardens, it’s a good drive and you drive through part of Riding Mtn. National Park. (No charge if you are just passing through.) Pretty much straight north. That would not require you to go further east to Winnipeg.
 Good hotel and grocery store in Swan River if you wanted to sleep there and drive a short distance to Stickflingers on the first day of your hunt. Or you can drive directly to the camp.

razorsharptokill, I believe we shared a camp at Weitas Creek a few years ago. At that time Gary offered a spring hunt, not sure if he still does.

I was fortunate in that I am only about 7-8 hours south of Stickflingers.
But it is a very special place and well worth the twenty hour drive. I’ve hunted bear five times in Canada, two or three times in Minnesota and nothing comes close to the experiences I’ve had at Stickflingers. 

I’ve a friend who hunts in Saskatchewan and says it’s good as well but costs are about the same and of course even further for you.
