« on: November 24, 2023, 11:52:24 AM »
I need a really warm and wind resistant pair of bibs or pants,, im almost ready for a pair of brown carhartts but curious if you guys recommend anything,,, no camo or plaid patterns, preferably heavy wool with a wind liner but the fabric needs to be quiet.

I have a pair of Carhart insulated bibs that are about 30 years old. They still do the job.

Check out skiing/mountaineering gear. Most of it is state of the art and lighter in weight but some of it may not be as quiet as you like and of course, you will pay for quality.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

As Terry said, Asbell bibs, I have a pair of the olive drab that I bought from him, very roomy for layering, and very quiet, and plenty of pockets for extra gear.

If the bids are roomy enough wear your rain pants underneath for wind protection when needed.

So, why the non-camo requirement? I wear camo hunting clothes as well as non-camo. Deer don't seem to care one way or the other as long as I stay still. I buy camo for the features rather than for concealment. Camo hunting clothes tend to be designed for hunting, thus things like wind blocker, quiet fabric, and plenty of pockets are designed into them as well. As you are finding, it is difficult to find clothing with the features we want that doesn't come with some sort of camo pattern on it.

The other reason I buy camo is often economics. "Hunting" clothes tend to go on sale after the season, which is usually when I buy them. For example, I have a Carhartt hooded arctic jacket that I bought several years ago. It's camo, but I didn't buy it for hunting since until now when it's nearly worn out, it is too noisy. I bought it because I wanted a warm jacket and the "hunting" ones were half price at the end of the season. The same jacket in black, tan or olive green would have cost twice as much, so camo it is.

I dont really like new camo especially that new bushy looking stuff or the stuff that looks like you're wearing a picture.    I may get those asbell bibs and have a mountaineering liner sewn inside.

Too bad you didn’t see my donation for St Jude’s last year. I donated a nearly perfect pair of bib,  at least they matched your criteria. (By the way, why do we use plural for these things-a”pair” of bibs?
They were Cabela’s gray wool with wind stop in them. They were good but very heavy. Good for sitting on a stand but I hated walking in them. And for that I prefer my Heater bodysuit.

Be advised in many areas wool is not the best outer layer. Picks up way too many seed pods, hitch hikers, often loosely woven or super expensive. Doesnt wear too good either if you’re honestly using it. Better choices for outer wear

I agree but nothing I have found or heard of is quieter and where I have deer as close as 15' or directly under my stand thats 10' high my clothes need to be silent,,,, and yeah many boutique hunting brands are until its freezing temps and thats where many fail.

I ordered those asbell bibs,,  I was going to get the predator ambush stuff but I found few who say its noisy and 1 person saying anything is noisy thats 1 too many especially for 450.00.

when I was little and just sat with dad on the stand during late season shotgun I wore my fathers old LL bean red plaid wool pants and jacket they were old very heavy and stunk like an old dog but they had an inside liner I think was silk that felt nice.. just sitting on an old  log in zero temps that suit was the warmest thing I ever wore and trust me I hated the cold weather back then..

I’m sitting in a blind, 20 degrees out where I’m sitting. Bow season over so I’m carrying something else and wearing an old woolrich coat and vest. Prob both over 25 years old.  I just don’t  wear them in. I’ve got a pair of Filson pants and coat too. Pants never get worn. Got 4 pieces of Asbell wool as well I’m not against it. Just never walk in w it because of its issues

This is my first year in the Cabela's wooltimate. It's very warm and quiet but I guess you have to say it's camouflage.

I have a pair of the Cabelas Dry Plus wool insulated bibs. The shell is 100% wool with the insulation being cotton/nylon. They are warm but very heavy.

Thanks everyone but where this was my xmas present i sent my wife a link tonthe asbell bibs to try,,  i talked with seamstress about sewing in a liner for wind stop and she said its not a problem going over the existing threading.

If that don't work i may have to get something camo but heard of another brand that does a desert tan type option.    Bring back 1940's woodland or early first run tree bark id wear that.
