Yup.... that split second distraction can cost fingers. I'm a one man shop myself and prefer it like that. On those rare occasions my wife comes out to the shop, if i'm running a machine she waits just inside the door until i notice her just for that reason. Typically she calls me on the phone.

The one time i got tangled up with a chop saw with a 10" blade was some kid playing hide and seek inside the apartment unit i was finishing. i had already run him out of the building once because i didn't want him distracting me or my crew. I had about 12 guys working for me then, and was setting finish in big 300 unit Apt. complexes.....

Well the kid snuck back in and was hiding in a corner behind some cabinets and i caught the motion out of the corner of my eye and lifted my hand up into the blade.... Fortunately the saw was winding down, and i didnt lose any fingers. But i was bleeding like a stuck pig!  I ran over and grabbed that 10 year kid by the scruff of the neck and shoved my bleeding hand in his face, and screamed ,  THIS is why i don't want you in here!....... Scared the poor kid to death, and got blood all down the front of his shirt....He took off like a scared rabbit.

Never saw the kid again either...    I was real lucky i didn't get hurt worse and cut any tendons. Got the web of my hand the worst..... I think the worst saw accident i ever had was a chainsaw kicking back and putting a kerf cut in my shin bone. Ruined a brand new pair of Carhart pants too. After that one i bought some logging chaps and never fall trees or run my big saw without them.
