wood scraps: what are some things you all do with them?
« on: December 15, 2023, 01:54:59 PM »
Hi everyone.  It's been a good while since I posted anything on here, but I figured I do it today.  Anyhow,  As some of you know, I gave up the professional bowyering gig last spring.  Well, I have many small peices of wood, around 10 years of it it, here and there, of all specicies, exotic and domestic, natural and manufactured.  I find  them useful for a few projects and I thought I'd share a few with you guys.  Forgive me that these aren't bows, but tis the season right?

I give them to knife guys and other crafters, and sometimes get some cool stuff back made from them...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Wow Kirk, I’ll bet that table took a good few hours to build. Very nice!

A couple years ago i thought id try my hand at a roll top Toy box for my grandson that i built from some scap red oak flooring.... This was a fun project too.

Now you want to talk hard core?  ....... Our old farm house was built in 1883 and the original foundation was pretty crude. They put a real foundation under the main house in the 50's some time, but didn't do a very good job of leveling the floor. This 18 X 22' family room was almost 2" out from side to side, and 3" out of level end to end.... I had to use a laser and cut custom tapered firing strips to level it out before putting the new plywood down. Then i put solid hickory flooring in. Did the whole thing solo and it took me a week. This was done in 2019 at age 64.... Wish i had done it in my 30's... LOL   This was hard core.   Check out that scribed piece of plywood at the stone hearth.... That was wild! :biglaugh:

KirkII -- I was a luthier before being a bowyer  -- folk fiddles and banjos, citarra, lyres, mountain dulcimers, fretted zithers, psalteries of several kinds, ukuleles, and a dreadnaught guitar once.  Bows are what I make from my scraps.... not the other way around.

Got a couple of guitars and I refer to my bows as my other stringed instruments.  :bigsmyl:
Scraps make dandy door stops, pulls and handles for cabinets, and thumb rings.

I have quite a bit of research material on building guitars, but never took the plunge myself. I looked into to building an acoustic 6 string  seriously a few years ago, but never found the time. i admire the craftsmanship needed to pull that off.
