Bowfishing reel problem
« on: May 17, 2008, 07:34:00 PM »
I shoot a Synergy or Zebco 88 for bowfishing.  The 200 lb FF line isn't coming out real smooth. Seems to be some drag.  I have taken them down all the way and rewound the spools, still the problem. Do I need more line on the spools?  Any ideas?

Thanks

Try to spray your line with reel magic. Or maybe switch to a braided line that is a smaller diameter. I shoot an AMS retriever so not a lot of help but I saw a guy switch to a bright yellow braided fishing line at a tournament last year and he did real well with it.
Good luck.

I wish I could help you out, John, but I use an AMS.

By the way, tell Tom he's brave for wearing a white shirt while bowfishing. I did that once. Looked like I rolled in the fish barrel.   "[dntthnk]"

Is your line kinking up when you give it some slack? If so your problem may be you having your drag set low. I've seen some problems when guys think setting their drag real low would be safer. Not so. Set your drag up tight. If not  the line tends to spin upon retrievel and make it kink up! Just a thought.

The other thing may be is your reel aiming level with your arrow shaft when it's on your rest. Alot of guys I've taken who use over the counter reel adapters that bungee on have the problem of the reel actually pointed down at the ground (or water in our case) which makes the line come off at a extreme angle. The answer here is to make a adapter that holds the reel at the same parrel as your arrow when it sits on your shelf.

I had the same problem, dropped down to the 150 worked.  Also Line Magic or Remington gun spray works great on keeping line lubed up.

How are you winding the line on to the reel, it matters what technique that you use. For a closed face spinning reel you need to lay the spool of line flat on the floor with the label facing up, if you put the line on by putting a pencil in the spool or by having the spool facing the wrong way it will begin to twist the line making it kink. Also if you use some old line as a backer and tie a blood knot to hook the old and new together you can fill your reel up more, with less lie waste, a full reel will pay out line better.

The line has been on the reel for a couple years. I took the face off, unwound it all the way, tightened the drag and wound it back on. I then sprayed some PAM cooking spray on the reeled line. Problem solved.

Hey John thats probably the same line you had on when you fished with me last. The slickness does wear off after a while. new line wouldn't hurt.

I'm relocated to warsaw Mo. now. If you feel like a trip let me know, lake is high and not right yet.

Hey Ron,

Went out last Sunday and had the best day ever I think. I'll bet we shot close to 40 gar, maybe more. A good number 2 footers or better. I'll keep that in mind. Still want to get you down on my property for a hunt.

Very important to keep the spool full of line so it will flow off easier.  If you have removed some line and it is not full, then rspool and it will definitely help.  I always use silicone on my reel and it really makes the line flow off the spool, but need to keep them full.  Mark
