Sleeper Bow ( Bear Super Grizzly )
« on: March 25, 2023, 02:20:11 PM »
Way back in the day; ( funny how old farts start a story )
I was wanting a Bear Kodiak Magnum so much and finally got one. It was great and I still have that bow.
At the time the bows to have from Bear Archery were, The Bear Super Kodiak; The Bear Kodiak Hunter and The Kodiak Magnum.
The Bear Super 48 just couldn't gain traction, I think because it was so short the finger pinch was just too much.
Now for the Sleeper; The Bear Grizzly and the Super Grizzly.
Both are 58" AMO and the Super Grizzly shoots much faster than the Grizzly because of the Fastcore limbs.
The Super Grizzly just didn't get that popular but those that have them just love it.
If I knew what a great bow they were, I would have wanted one of those instead of the K Mag.
But don't get me wrong, the K Mag is amazing as long as you don't mind the finger pinch.
I  had a Super Griz about 8 years ago and it was 50# @28" and was great but I was getting so it wasn't comfortable for me to shoot.
I recently got another Super Griz 35# @28" and I'm shocked at the arrow speed.
I haven't chronographed but it seems to shoot as fast as my 45# bows with an arrow that is only about 50 gr. less mass weight.
So the point of this whole thing, my hats off to the Bear Super Grizzly.
If you are in the market for a good hunting bow and don't want to pay the price of a custom, give the Bear Super Grizzly a serious look.
Thanks for reading and I would like to hear some of your opinions about the Super Grizzly.  :archer:

I had a 50# Kodiak magnum. Great 52” hunting bow. I liked it and shot it better than the 58” Grizzly I had.

Firefly Messenger longbows.

I have a number of high end bows, but these Firefly longbows amaze me.  Great performance and the best value in trad archery.

The Super Grizzly is a great bow that doesn't get talked about a lot.

I've always been a fan of the short bows and really like the Kodiak Mag, but I would recommend the Super Grizzly for someone just starting out.

As someone that owns and shoots with vintage Bear Super Kodiak, Kodiak Hunter, Kodiak Magnum and standard Grizzly bows, I can say with authority I love all of them. I have not shot a Super Griz, but would love to see how they compare to the others. As far as the ones I do own, the Super K is the most accurate in my hands, likely due to a lower draw weight than the others.
Looking forward to reading what other Super Griz owners have to say.

An awful lot of us started with a Bear Grizzly.  I think all three of my brothers and I had one when we started out.  I still have one of the Grizzlies from my youth and I have loaned another to the son of a friend of mine.  I still think that it is one of the bows you just can't go wrong with.

I got a 60# Bear Cheyenne about 20 years ago.  It is 55" AMO and has been my favorite since I got it, but I got old and it was increasingly difficult to hold a good group at 20 yards with it.  Finally, I got a 50# version of the Bear Cheyenne this past December.  Now it is my favorite!  It seems it is the right bow for me. It is short enough to fit into the tree stands I like the most yet is long enough that it is comfortable to shoot.  It seems to shoot just as fast as my Kodiak TD.  If you are shopping for a bow I urge you to check it out.

I started out with a 40# Wonderbow. I never shot any Bear bow except for a Bear super 48. My uncle shot a Bear bow I think either a Grizzly or Kodak of some fashion. I would have liked to have bought that bow, just for the memories of the pleasure that one bow gave him. I remember playing baseball in the empty lot next door to his house. Gene was a busy guy, but I remember him going out by his garden and practicing shooting with his bow. He shot it well.

He had five boys with multiple grandkids, and when he passed on, the bow ended up in with one of his grandkids. As it should.

Back to my experience.  There are better choices in the Bear archery line, but it had a major impact on my life. I bought the Super 48 in about 1972. That fall I went into the Army. Three years later i came home and found the compound bow had come into its own. My dad, my brother in law all had switched over to the dark side. So, I followed along and bought a compound. Then my hunting really tapered off to nothing for about ten years.

My family and I moved to a small MN town that had a solid archery league and I was invited to join.  I shot one year and at the end of the league competition, the leaders announced we were going to have a throw back night and to bring out our old recurves or longbows.

I dug out the Super 48 and brought it and the few remaining 2016s I had left.  Without practicing, my first two arrows landed within a couple inches of each other at twenty yards, easily in the kill zone. One of the guys asked me how I did that, and I replied IDK, I just looked at the bull and shot.

It was a revelation to me. I thought to myself, this is way more fun than shooting that compound. So, I sold the compound and I started on my journey with recurves and eventually a few longbows. The Super 48 brought me back.

This thread inspired me to pull out my Super Grizzly. Bears have a reputation for being not-so-fast, but my super grizz is a screamer.

I have a Grizzly and a Kodiak clone.  The clone shoots heavy arrows very well.  The grizzly would be @68-69# at my draw and I have not shot it much.  Just not enough time for the bows I have.

One of the first bows i started out with many years ago was a Bear Grizzly. i graduated to a Super Kodiak once i earned enough money working summer jobs. i killed my first few deer with those bows. Never had the opportunity to shoot a super Grizzly.

For the extra performance the Super is the way to go over the standard Grizzly.
