A Fallen Hero
« on: July 01, 2024, 10:57:48 AM »
I am sitting by the window at our cabin and feeling pretty down. One of my very best friends passed away Saturday. Staff Sergeant David Larson served our country with the 7th Cav in Vietnam. (Just found out i was wrong on the unit). He actually lead men in battle, in the jungle. And throughout his life he was a leader.

We met later in life but we packed some great times into the time we had. We bowhunted for deer together, hunted other stuff like pheasants, and ruffed grouse. And we worked together.

For a few years we rode our motorcycles out to the Black Hills of South Dakota, to ride those great roads and hike most of the trails. I was the better bow hunter, (in my mind anyway) but I never came close to attaining his riding abilities. He was fearless on his Goldwing.

And then the residual  effects from His service in Vietnam began to take their toll on Dave. He could no longer do the simplest things in life. The last trip we made was out to Wishek ND to see Beemann about a bow he had for sale.

When we got back to his home, we took the bows out for some target shooting and that was the last activity we did together. He needed help with how to hold the arrow on the string and when to release, but we got it done.

I hope this is acceptable because I had to write it somewhere.

We are losing more Korea and 'Nam vets now that most of the WWII are gone. Sorry for your loss of a good friend-they are not gone as long as we remember them.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

I'm sure that we all appreciate your beautiful tribute.  Your deep love for a dear friend can be seen clearly.  Our heroes deserve every bit of appreciation we can give--to those who have passed on and to those still with us.  I have made it a practice whenever I see guys wearing the uniform or the cap of their branch of service and especially the older vets, to make it a point to thank them personally for their service.  We all owe them so much.
The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

Gary, sorry for your loss, my prayers go out to you and his family. I feel your pain as my brother died in Nam Dec27, 1967 and not many days go that I don't think of him still.
