Mounting Broad head to woodies after sharpening ?
« on: August 19, 2024, 02:48:02 PM »
Those of you who sharpen your broad head before mounting it on your woodies do you have any tricks on how to mount without getting cut or dulling your newly sharpened broad head? I used to press it in a block of wood but looking for a better way.

It’s easier for me to sharpen the heads before mounting. I just carefully hold the hot head with pliers when mounting.  I’ve never had good luck pushing the hot broadheads into wood—it seems like they were always misaligned and it took a lot of time to get them to spin correctly.  The best thing I have found is a grooved tray to hold the arrow, so can I slowly rotate it and with LIGHT pressure, push the arrow/broadhead into the alignment hole.  So the only part of the broadhead touching anything is the point and you are not pushing hard enough dull it.  I can’t remember where I bought this but it would be pretty simple to make one out of wood.

I'm the opposite. I mount all my broadheads on my wood arrows so I can check the flight of each one. After shooting them to make sure they fly good, I then sharpen them ready to hunt. Which brings to mind a question. If you shoot an arrow do you then take the braodhead off to resharpen it?

I personally like to have the head mounted so I have a way to hold them for sharpening.  :dunno:

I just hold them with a pliers, heat them and push shaft in adjusting till I get them spinning true.

No, if the head is already mounted then I just leave it on for sharpening. I just find them easier to sharpen on a short piece of arrow vs  full length. I always shoot at least 1 hunting arrow to make sure it shoots well, then resharpen and put back into quiver.  And I keep at least 1 broadhead/arrow combo set up for practice all season.

I shoot all my arrows with broadheads on to ensure good flight, then sharpen them.
