Easton Half In half out Inserts

Anybody have experience with these?
I have some Easton Axis traditional 500s with the 75 grain  insert. I was shooting with a backdrop of black dirt. My arrow hit the dirt and I heard a funny sound.

When I pulled the arrow out of the dirt, I saw I must have hit a rock in the dirt.
The insert was bent, the shaft bent a little too, but when I bent it back straight, the insert broke but the shaft appeared to spring back to original shape.

These things fly great out of my 48# bow. I was going to order some more but when I read some reviews, one guy said he had two different experiences where the insert broke on wild game, allowing the broadheads to break free from the arrow.

That got me thinking maybe I should look for a stronger insert.

My buddy had the aluminum half out inserts in Alaska a couple years ago and broke several shooting judo’s into tussocks. They were super fragile right at the shoulder and broke with any side torque. He was disgusted with them to say the least. I think there is a real design issue with them being so thin right at the shoulder.  I have some of the steel ones, they seem fine, much stronger metal of course. For an aluminum insert I’d stick with hit inserts and aluminum arrow footings.

The aluminum ones are TERRIBLE! The steel ones at 75g are great, no problem with them and I highly recommend them for the 5mm Axis arrow.

I have a story. A not so good one with the very 1st shot on game.  I will never use those again.

Before I get on the story, let me preface it with this.....

I have blown through both shoulder blades on 50ish pound javalina more than once with 4 blade Zwickeys and there were witnesses on all of them as they were group hunts.

I received some arrows with these pretend inserts, I'd never seen them before. First shot on a javie the arrow 'stobbed' the onside shoulder and the javie made off with the arrow.

I never found ANYTHING. I was in total disbelief!!!

Then, the guy I was helping hunt shot a javie the next hunt which was two weeks later.  I was tickled for him.  He was at the skinning shed and I was having lunch in the ranch house when someone came in an asked me to come look at something strange about SteveM's javie.

When skining one shoulder showed this ugly gelatin like matter described best by gelled ground up lungs.  It was NASTY looking.  I stated that there was probably a broadhead stuck in there and to be careful without thinking another thing about it.

I’ll wait a bit for more info but am leaning towards Ryan’s suggestion. They fly great as I mentioned.

I have a buddy who uses the steel ones and really likes them. He's shot a few deer with the same arrow and it's still going just fine.

I did kill two javies after that BTW with the same arrows not knowing what happened as like I said, I found nothing.

Someone came back again in about 5 minutes, so out to the shed I went again. Steve handed me a broadhead...........MINE!

I saw what happened and to the head and was a bit confused to say the least....

So after Steve got his two I had only one hunter that hadn't killed anything all week, most had limited out, so I took the one hunter to my "Trap" hub where he proceeded to get trampled over and over.  While he was trying to find a place to dig in after I dropped him off on a 'drive by', he saw an arrow in the grassy area of the apron of the road and stuck it in his quiver.  It was MINE.

Now I had the whole story....  Like I said, I will never hunt with these aluminum inserts again.....

Here is a photo of my arrow.  Arrow shaft seems fine,  target point shows deformed head where it hit the rock. And the insert did not come apart until I  twisted it out. It was obviously cracked at the pact tho.

In the spirit of fairness I DID HIT a rock so there is that. Generally I have a high opinion of Easton shafts/products for what that is worth.And would have left it at that if it were not for those on reviews on the product ordering site.

I really don't care who made em, they are garbage.

I should have known better myself as there's a thing called physics and the act of leverage. They should have known better also.

I will proclaim what I feel as to prevent anyone from losing an animal to a defaulty product.

I'm so glad others experienced the same thing i did with the aluminum inserts. I have gone to the 5mm Axis arrow and tried the aluminum and they are terrible and ordered the steel and so far they have taken all I shoot at.  I have not hunted with them but plan on it and am confidant they will perform very well.  I sure hope so because I have a very good tune out of my Nmist Baraga.

Just to make it clear, I have only used aluminum inserts since I started hunting when I was a teen.  I've never had issues with aluminum inserts. Its just these inserts in the title I'm talking about.

Another option if you like half out inserts are the Black Eagle Rampage half out used with the FMJ shafts.  They are threaded all the way through so you can use a 8x32 set screw to splice a HIT insert to it to create an internal footing.  This also stiffens the shaft for tuning.  I have been stump shooting this combo for about 2 years and haven’t broken one.
