Storing Supplies in a Cold Shop
« on: December 11, 2024, 10:17:49 AM »
I have a hanging unit heater in my garage/shop that I use to keep it comfortable when I'm working on projects.
It is not on all the time, I will typically turn it on when I get home from work and by the time I change clothes and eat dinner the shop is nice and toasty.
On extremely cold days, I may not even go out there, because I'm too cheap to burn the fuel needed to keep it warm.
So, I have several different supplies (glue, contact cement, spray urethane, True Oil...etc) that will sit out in the shop and go through multiple cycles of heat and cold, mostly cold this time of year. Anyone in a similar situation? How do you store your supplies?  I'm thinking about setting up a shelf down in the basement where the supplies will stay warm and transport them to the shop as needed.
Also, any concerns about keeping your batteries from battery powered tools in the cold? I have accumulated a fair amount of Milwaukee hand tools with a pile of batteries that are always sitting in the shop.

Same here. All my glues, finishes, etc. and my batteries go into the house for the winter. The cold can ruin some types of glue and finishes. Actually, I don’t like to keep batteries in the garage in the summer either.

My shop/ garage is under the living portion. There's a  duct I can open
Keeps it somewhat warm 50ish° I can warm up with a electric or propane Dewalt heater.

If you have a large cabinet, or can build one that has a light inside, that's all you need to keep your glue and paint from freezing. i use a 150 watt bulb inside my 6'x 8' well pump house and it works fine. (little wood frame building with insulation 7' high ceiling.

i built a very small spray booth with an exhaust fan that is 4' wide x 8' long and only has a 7' height. I have shelves at one end to keep all my glues, stain, and paint stored. i insulated it with 1.5" styrofoam and it has 4 light sockets and a string of halogen lights too. I keep 2 lights on with 100 watt heat lamps to keep it around 50-60 degrees at night, but can flip a switch and turn on 2 more to bring it up to 80 degrees when spraying.  With the halogen lights i can get over 100 degrees, but only use those when i'm spraying....

I have another 12'X12' insulated room in my shop that i tried to use as a climate controlled room with dehumidifiers and halogen lights for heat.... WAY too expensive to keep that stuff running all the time. after a year of seriously high electric bills, i gave up on heating that room in winter and only flip the halogens on in extreme cold temps which we rarely get here in Oregon. i sold that dehumidifier.

I’ve got a few here from the outside, but none of the inside…. Not much room for photos inside.

Keep in mind I had a bunch of doors available in those days. So that’s why I used the expensive side lights and fancy door for the front.
