I've went topless a couple times too
I built a test recurve form and driled it at 3" centers below the form surface, using a 3/4" bit. I didn't want to wait to get to town for dowels so I made some 9/16 osage pegs , you have to force them in but they tested to 75 # and I use 60 on bows... Bow came out with flawless glue lines.

I see this mule tape comes in different widths, how wide do you use? Thanks.

I believe we are using 3/4" mule tape.

When I was going topless, used 3/4” wide tape with 5/16” steel pins. I think the test weight of the tape was 2500#! Never any problem with glue lines, pressuring up to 45/50 psi. Be sure to use a metal pressure strip under the air hose.
