Knapped knife

  A few weeks ago I was sent a box of obsidian ,plate glass and a beginners kit with some very useful knapping tools from a really nice gentleman .
   I’ve never had any lessons but always wanted to try my hand at knapping since I was a teenager.
  Well in 2-1/2 weeks I’ve been practicing so much with plate glass and obsidian .
  I’ve made some antler tools with copper rod inserted from a friends buck antler who passed a way last year .
  So here is what I’ve made as far as knives so far .
 The butt cap is from some scrap wood that came from a local guitar shop and I did use artificial sinew around the front of handle and made up some pine rosin with a little pure bees wax too. Soften it a bit so I could shape it before it hardened .

That’s really good Keefer. I’ve given knapping a go and I actually thought I’d be good at it. Turned out it was a bit harder than I thought it would be. I’m a stone mason and thought that would give me a leg up (not) I have made some decent points and a few knife blades but mostly I made gravel. Obsidian was easier for me than flint or chert was. I’ve been getting ready to start again now that it’s getting cold again. Keep up the good work, looking really good so far.

That was my experience, too. I tried it with glass. Lots of glass.

I noticed your from Austin, Sam. You should have access to Georgetown flint living there. At least from what I’ve read. My daughter lives there and I’ve tried to get her to go look for me around Georgetown TX. She’s looked around places she walks but hasn’t stumbled across anything yet, just a few small pieces.
I haven’t tried glass but, I have been encouraged to do so. I’m going to start again soon with the gtown and obsidian I have left. I like knapping but it’s been a little frustrating.
Keefer seems to be killing it though.

Welcome. It’s actually named for the Georgetown plateau which ends around Georgetown TX. That’s not far from Austin 20-30 minutes. Do a little hunting online and I’m sure you’ll find lots of info. I’ve been on websites where guys go out and find hundreds of pounds of it in a few days. Also might find some tips on where to look for it..  good luck if you go hunting for it.
