Side project mid bow build
« on: February 03, 2025, 11:04:15 AM »
Just felt like showing off a little side project I did while waiting for a snake skin to rehydrate last weekend. I used ball python skin which took a while to rehydrate properly. So I took about two hours to make this black cherry bamboo pipe, including grinding and sharpening a drill bit to hollow the bowl. Most of the work was done with the belt sander to go quick.

The bow is almost finished, last coat of truoil went on the morning. Just needs a handle wrap and skin end wraps. I’ll make a proper post for it once I get that done. Still need to decide on a handle material.

Anyone else take on fun little quick projects during waiting spells on bows?

How does it smoke?

I'm in the middle of building 4 sets of limbs for a 21" riser going to Germany.  As a side project, i bought another boat... :o :o :o

It has "Promise"...

Pretty well. Once you have a good ember it seems to not need much watching to keep burning to the bottom. The stem has a 1/8” hole drilled through. Everything seems to be a good ratio to breath well without burning hot.

I feel like your side project is a bit bigger than the one I decided to tackle

I’m not gonna lace it up tonight since I’ll be getting the kids up early. But I’ll have it ready to go for tomorrow night. That snaky bow is ready for a handle wrap and I think it’ll get this one

Well to be perfectly honest… I’m not going to tackle another boat restoration project. This old 22’ Sea Ray is pretty trashed inside, and spent some time outside uncovered. The engine which I believe is a 351 Windsor is toast and could be parted out I suppose . The exhaust manifolds alone are valuable, and the OMC outdrive could be in good shape.

But….. I have no interest in tearing into it at all.  I bought it cheap for the heavy duty trailer alone. I bought an old 1990 Bluewater boat about 5 years ago that was in decent shape that has kept me busy working on to keep it running well. It’s 19’ and has a Cuddy cabin with a canvas top over the  helm…. But… the trailer has terminal cancer.

A couple years ago I pulled off a circus act and rebuilt the trailer. Well… not exactly rebuilt it. But put some industrial strength steel bandaids on her and new bunks. Check out this project…

Unfortunately…. The bandaids held up fine, but the cancer spread to the main frame by the axels and can’t be repaired this time…time for a new trailer.
