Bows From Yesteryear
« on: March 13, 2025, 07:45:40 PM »
About 70 years ago I eagerly awaited my Sports Afield, Outdoor Life, and Field and Stream magazines. From one of them, I ordered a Malibu Archery catalogue. After looking it over thoroughly, I finally ordered an all bamboo bow that I used until I joined the army.  it was a "Wildcat" model, and it was light in the hand, pulled at 40#@ 28", and had great cast. It was my constant companion in the woods and fields around the house.

Malibu Archery sold Pearson and Bear bows, but for an eleven year old, the "Wildcat" fit the budget. One of the first things that I ask about, after leaving the army, was where was my bow? That's when I found out that one of my brothers friends saw the bow, and strung it. Only thing was, he strung it backward, pulled it, and caused it to explode. It broke my heart to find this out. I have owned and shot lots of bows, but that combination of lightweight, accurate, and cast were unmatched. I now own a Cougar, and Panther bow from Malibu, but still looking for a Wildcat.   :archer2: :deadhorse: :archer2:

I have one bow made in the 1990's, two from the 1980's, one from the 1970's, and a bunch from the 1960's and maybe one late 1950.  The bows from the 60's and 70's are what, as a kid, I drooled over hanging from the walls of friends father's homes who bowhunted.  I just have a soft spot for recurves of that era.  And they are still very viable hunting tools.

Sort of the same story. Wanted to go Deer hunting in IL , was a 6 day, shotgun only season back then. But archery was 30 days. Went to my Mom’s house looking for my Pearson Pinto, 55#@28. Found it in a closet standing on end. Not happy as I had hung it before I left for the Corps. Limb was twisted, I was sad because I had used that bow for many adventures.

Thomas, I would settle today, just to have that broken bow. I would love to shoot that bow again, to see if it was all that I remembered.
Oh, and thanks for your service.
