How many twists in Dacron Bowstring?
« on: February 17, 2007, 05:48:00 AM »
Hello,  I recently had a friend make a couple of Dacron strings for my new 60" recurve.  They are 14 strand, but they came out alittle too long.  My question is how many twists can you put in a bowstring before you start to seriously weaken the string.  Right now they are wound pretty tight.  The bow is 60#@28"...Thanks for any input that you might have.

Ideally you want fewer twist per inch. I don't remember the right or wrong number but 6 or so per inch isn't bad. If the string knots up before you string it onto the bow it's probably not good. I've shot fast flight with a lot of twists would not do dacron as tight.
Maybe some some else will have a better formula.

Brownell recommends 1 twist in the string for each 2-3 inches of string length.

I'm going to say that the Brownell recommendation is for endless strings.  You want more than 1 twist per 2-3" for flemish.  I've seen some that would probably come apart with no more than that.

On the original question, if they are flemish you can get away with quite a bit, but you are loosing performance and can compromise the string with too much.  I guess 4-5 twists per inch would be the max.

Brownell says 20-40 twists for flemish.
