How wide can I go?
« on: May 31, 2008, 02:56:00 AM »
Im curious how wide of a cutting diameter I can have from a 2 blade head and still make consistent passthroughs on whitetails. Im shooting a Bob Lee takedown recurve that pulls 52# at my 28" draw with arrow weight at arround 500 grains. Im flirting with the idea of trying Magus 1's or Deltas out of my set-up. What do you think? Would Stos be a better choice for my set-up?

There are4 too many variables to accuarately answer thatq question, Kiamichi. Did the arrow hit bone? Did it pass through sinew or connective tissue? What is the shaft diameter and how is the shaft finished? Is it smooth like a carbon or kind of rough like a cx Heritage? The amount of penetration that you will get is probably as dependant on the shaft of the arrow as it is on the width of the two blade. Now going to a three or four blade is a little bit different matter, but as far as comparing two blades go, You'll more or less have to guess at it and each shot is going to be different.

You should have no problems with an 1 1/2" broadhead, since it's what I shoot.  I like heavy arrows though.  It makes a big difference in my opinion.  James Wrenn shoots less weight (bow and arrow), and shoots through them with a 2" Simmons Treeshark.

Broadhead design would play a part.Simmons are big but have less drag so the wide heads work about as well as smaller ones for me.With that poundage and arrow weight I would not even consider a small head like a Stos for deer sized animals when I could shoot a larger one. jmo
