arrow is wearing spot beside my shelf!
« on: June 05, 2008, 09:38:00 PM »
I need some help figuring out why my arrow is rubbing a spot beside and slightly below my shelf close to my bow hand.  The rounded part beside the shelf now has a flat spot wore and is through the finish of the bow.  My arrows have about 2" streaks on them, the steaks start about 4" before the fletching and are about 2" long. I bareshaft tuned the bow and the spine of the arrow seems to be right.  My nock point shows to right also when bareshafting, its a little above 3/8".  I have played with the nock point to see if this was the cause and from 5/8" to 3/8" the streak still shows up.  Anybody have a clue on what to do about this?  Its really messing with my head.

Yup, sounds like you are plucking the string, your string hand should come straight back or fall limp on release and not fly away from your face. Shawn

I had this problem with a Robertson, and it ended up that the arrow was too weak.

I think it's an arrow spine issue

Dang, I have tried all sorts of arrows and still it still happens.  Maybe my release, I try hard to use back tension.  My arrows seem to have a kick about 50% of the time, very very frustrating!

I was getting a similiar problem once. Got a loud scraping noise when I released from the arrow hitting the shelf. Finally realized the arrows were WAY overspined for that bow.
Try adding weight to the point, or lighter spined arrows. Shawn's also right about plucking the string. I'm also an authority on the stuff that causes! LOL! I'm learning!

Every time this happens to me, I find the nock is set too low.  In my case, I get arrow porpoise which is also accompanied by a "noisy arrow".  Try a few shots nocking the arrow on top of the present nock set and if this is it, you should see an immediate difference.  5/8" sounds like plenty, but I've owned bows that only performed well when the nock was 7/8" up.

I had a similar problem for quite a while, and the fact of the matter is, it could be any of the things mentioned so far.  I am certainly no expert here, but from what you described, if your arrows are in fact correct spine, then it's probably your release.

In my case it was specifically my string hand.  I was reading a post in the shooters forum one day, and a little light bulb went off.  Terry Green was helping someone on a thread about string hand tension.  He said something like "you're probably cupping your hand.  Like this: ) ...instead of like this: ]

I went out, and really worked on keeping the back of my string hand relaxed and straight.  Viola!  Arrow flight problems straightened right up and shelf contact was a thing of the past.  I was taking such a deep hook, and at the same time "cupping" my hand, that I was putting a lot of torque on the string, resulting in cruddy flight.

Not saying that's what you're doing, but you might  check that. Good luck!

Also watch your bow hand. I had a buddy having a similar problem and when I watched him shoot I could tell he was toqueing his bow hand and getting the arrow to rub the side if his bow right above his hand but under the shelf

I have that problem occasionally since I switched to three under.  I have found it to be related to my release.  If I pop the string from my fingers instead of just opening my grip on it, the arrow will drop and hit the shelf and my bow hand.  I actually have a scar on my bow hand from it.  Even today, with knowing about it, I managed to bury pieces of fletching in the meat of my hand two times.  Thank God for good tweezers.  I'm still sore but it reminds me to just let the string leave my fingers.

Guess I was really wanting to blame the bow.  Cause Ive tried different arrows, started with a glove then tried a tab, moved my nock point all over the place, tried a deep hook, not so deep hook.  Nothing is working!

Have someone take a video of you shooting, and post it on the shooters forum.  Can just about promise you'll get some good feedback.  Good luck!

only othe thing I would add is make sure your nock is not too tight on the string.
I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.
