Is 225 grains to much?

I'm using carbon shafts and they fly real well with 225 grains up front. The total weight is around 550 or 560 grains... This would be roughfly 40% or so right?  Is that to much to hunt or shoot 3D with?  I know a lesser grained arrow will allow for more trajectory, but I like shooting one set up both hunting and 3D....

Your thoughts please...

225grains is what i like to use up front because 100gr inserts are common for most shafts and it gives you a large number of 125 broadheads to use also. 550 is a all round weight for speed and penatration imo. And if they are flying well why change a thing.

That setup sounds good to me, Steve. I shoot 250g broadheads, and have arrows that weigh about 600g. If they're flying well, I wouldn't change a thing if I was you!

I'm planning on using 225 up front with my next arrow setup for the same reasons that hamish stated. 100gr inserts are easy to come by and they only make hex heads in 125gr    :D

Yep, and glue them on the steel adapter of your choice, and you can get a hex head of 325 grains (or more if you add weight inside the adapter using bird shot or whatever else you choose).

Steve, depending on a bunch of variables, including arrow length and fletching weight, your FoC would be somewhere around 20%.

I'm shooting 250 gr up front on some Gold Tips and they fly great from my 50-55# longbows.  I like to shoot the same arrows for hunting and 3D.  I know I probably loose out on some points on the 3D course on the longer shots but I shoot for fun.  The scores don't matter to me much.

You said they fly well.  If you can hit what you're aiming at, you're fine.

One of my favorites is the Vapor 3000 carbon arrow with 250 grain making a total weight of 520 for my 54# recurve.

Steve, I shoot a 55#@28" recurve. With Carbon Express Heritage shafts, 100gr brass inserts and 125gr. broadheads they come to 600gr. The main thing is the arrow flight of course. This set up with the shafts cut to 29.25" give me great flight. They also hit the target hard! The tradgetory is good out to 30yds. You're on the right track I'd say.

The only static spex I look for in a completed hunting arrow are the GPP and FOC numbers, and a proper 75x105 4" nanner 4-fletch.  

With a 55# Mohawk longbow, I've got 29" Trad AD arrows at 665 grains for 12.1 GPP and 29% FOC.  The dynamics are there, too - great flight at all hunting distances.

If I had a yearning for one arrow to do-it-all for both hunting and longer target distances, I'd probably opt for 10 GPP and as high an FOC as possible.  With 29" Beman 500's I'm getting 10 GPP and 27% FOC.
