I am looking forward to taking my first Elk Hunt in September with TBAR M Outfitters.

I would appreciate your recommendations on some nice Elk Hunting reads?

Thanks in advance!

Dwight Schuh's BUGLING FOR ELK is a good one.

" A Man Made Of Elk" by tradgang's own Dave Petersen (Dave2old). I'm a few chapters into it and am finding it a very enjoyable read. It had a great review by Gray's Sporting Journal and is highly reccommended by Don Thomas  :notworthy:

I'll second "a Man Made of Elk".  I've already read it twice.  I like his a back to basics hunting style.  Too many of the other elk books in my personal library contain too much chest pounding and "newest, latest hot tactics".

Yeah it does not get much better than "A Man Made of Elk", Dave outdid himself on this one. I just finished the book and I have elk on my brain constantly. I have read just about every book written on elk hunting and this one surpasses them all. You will love hunting with Mike and Danny, awesome people and wild elk country!

Thanks

I was not impressed with the  Lapinski book I read, I am going to buy the man made of elk and give it a read!

Richie and Buckster -- I just returned from a 2-day, 20-mile horsey ride through the headwaters of the Hermosa Creek roadless area (which local sportsmen are working to have designated wilderness in order to keep the motors out forever) where Mike hunts. I saw only two elk skeletons that looked like winterkill. Amazingly, our fears of massive winterkill don't seem to be the case. Turkeys took a bad beating, but that's another story. Because elk came down so late last year to where roadside and ATV rifle hunters could kill 'em en masse, as happens in early snow years, the rifle seasons were a bust. My take is that any extra loss of bulls to winterkill -- for which I've yet to find any evidence -- was more than offset by all the thousands that were not killed by rifle hunters after migrating down to winter habitat. Lots of water, everything is green. Should be a banner season so not to worry. Dave

Dave, thanks for the good news, I will be hunting Sept 12-19 yipee.

T. Downing, thanks for the recommendation.  I contacted David Peterson via his website and he emailed me within the hour, he too had high praise for Mike and Danny. Really a nice gentleman.

My signed copy of 'A Man Made of Elk" is in the mail, looking forward to this great read.

Thanks again everyone.

Richie, from everything I have heard, Dave's comments about the status of our elk herd is right on. Good to hear that you are coming back, as you know, a special place. T

"Man Made of Elk," - Excellent read!  Dave also took some time to share advice with me "rookie" regarding broadheads, arrows, etc..Much appreciated.

I hope in the future to hunt with TBAR M...they sound like they run a class operation.  Good luck and enjoy!  Share your stories with us when you return.

Don't let Dave2old scare you. He is a great guy and very passionate  about things that matter to him. His books make you think about what matters to you.

I spoke to Mike Murphy yesterday and he advised that the winter kill appeared to be very nominal and that they've glassed a lot of elk in the meadows.

He trumpeted what others have said on this tread, that the herd appears to ge in good shape.

He also stated that he has had a couple of cancellations for the 2nd traditional hunt, I think this is 9/22-9/29, should anyone have an interest?

I'll second (or third, fifth, whatever) Dave Petersen's "Man Made of Elk"!  That is a damn fine read!

I've been a fan of Dave's writing, but never got around to reading any of his books (my bad), but I've found a kindred spirit and a great writer.  If you have a passion for hunting wtih trad gear (especially elk), you owe it to yourself to read this book.

I've just started his book "On the Wild Edge" and it's just as good.
