KS turkey hunters
« on: February 19, 2007, 05:43:00 AM »
Anyone hunt in or live in KS who could recommend some decent state land (wma, crp, etc) for a non res to check out?  I'm looking at the north east corner.

Thanks!

We have a lot of old strip mine areas that are state owned in this area that hold a lot of turkeys.  They are hard to hunt unless you know the areas pretty well though.

If you plan a hunt down here the best time is during the week because you'll have lots of company on weekends.  I used to work 4-10's and had Fridays off to hunt.  I seldom saw another person on those days.

There are several public hunting areas south of KC about 50 to 60 miles, one of them is very good. Does this fall into where you plan on going or is it too far south? If it works I'll be happy to give directions, maps and even show you the areas.Do you know the dates of when you may be in Kansas?Areonut is right though about weekdays being ideal.   Ben

I'll add that I am willing to play 'guide' for a day and show you around the areas if you decide to come down this way.  Won't guarantee anything but a walk in the woods though.

From what I've seen the snow and ice have had no effect on eastern Kansas turkeys.I see normal amounts of birds every day.

Wow guys, thanks a ton!

Right now I leave Fairbanks Alaska on 10 april.  My goal was to get to Nebraska by the 13th and start hunting the 14th.   That is going to change though and I'm going to get to MN sooner and try and take part in the bow only time zone in NE.  My plan is to leave Alaska the 2nd or 3rd if I can find a flight change that doesnt take me round the world first.  Fish steelhead on the brule in WI for a couple of days with my paps then head south to NE and possibly get 4 or 5 days of bow time in before the shotgunners get going.   I'll have both a longbow and a dbl barrel 10 gauage black powder shotgun along.  Be kinda neat to get a bird with both.

Other then that I need to get to MO by the 23rd so there is time in there to hunt KS and I was recommended to do this by one of the the NE big game folks though he didnt give up info as to where so readily lol.

So far I havent been able to get access to the walk in areas link on the ks web page, and due to the holliday and weekend I've yet to call, that is my goal as of tuesday is to start getting areas.  Been spending most of my time looking over google earth of the NE areas I am looking at hunting and think I've pretty much sealed those areas down to a few.  I have gone over every one of the WMA's in the north east corner and have a list of those I'm interested in.   Havnet looked them over on google earth yet thoguh that's coming in the next couple of days.

If the hunting is good I'm willing to go!  So really no part of KS is off limits at this point.  Partners are good, bow or gun, just good company is fun to have!!!  And the tradgangers are definatly some of the best out there to have sharing a camp with.

Dan,

Contact a KS biologist...they are very helpful.  They redo the walk in info every year so it may not be up yet.  Do not be afraid to use the walk in areas...the vast majority are VERY good habitit from what I saw 2 years ago.  I'm planning on April 18-22.

AkDan sometimes the walk-in hunting maps are'nt released to the public until right before the turkey season. If you would send me your address I will gladly send you a copy as soon as they come out. Time to renew my license anyway so I'll run by KDWP office tomorrow and see if they are availible.
Same offer goes out to you also Stevo. Just let me know if I can help. Bretto

I would look west north of Hayes KS for those Rios.  If you can find a patch of trees there will be turkeys.  Check around the Webster wildlife area.  I've heard a lot of good things about that area.  Like everyone else mentioned. Monday-Friday would be the best.

Akdan, be sure to check on the turkey walkin areas. The normal walkin hunting areas for deer and upland game have different opening dates. Much of the normal walkin areas are not open in the spring. KW&P can give you the straight on that.

OK gang, my dates have changed to facilitate MORE turkey bonanza.

Gonna arrive in MN the 2nd, try and get to KS the 8 or 9th and hunt through the 14th or so, then head up to NE till the 22nd, then to MO.  Start with the longbow, then go to the blackpowder shotgun.  Then maybe head back to NE or KS if I havent had my fill of talking turkey yet  :D .

I'm wide open for KS, just looking for some state land that isnt getting overly hammered.  Figured it might be perfect opening day starting mid week in KS.  Ne starts on a saturday.

The WIHA's for spring are not out yet, have a packet coming.

Again, thanks for all the help in advance!!!!

One of the guys I'll be hunting with is based out of St Louis.   I have 3 wma's in the northern part (2 I've hunted before and really dont care to go back too but am saving as backups), the 3rd is a new one I was put onto that seems to get overlooked.

I'm game for anything though.

Ben,

Just me in KS.  What area are you referring too?

My dad is going to join me in NE for a few days.  Be a pair of black powder shotgunners, should be fun!
