Some suggestions on moccasins?
« on: February 19, 2007, 01:02:00 PM »
I have been looking for a proper set of moccs(I like the knee-boot style)that are tough enough for the rigors of hunting the high desert. I have looked at the Minnetonka ones, I like the fit very well--however they look like they are about to explode just walking around the store to me. I could be wrong on my assessment of the Minne's, and if I am someone please correct me.

Needless to say, I am wanting a decent set, does anyone here either make them or know someone who does? Or even just a nudge in the right direction would be very helpful.

 Thanks guys, Jeff

Check out this website, they are really pretty decent mocs, for what your wanting. I have never owned any, but I have seen plenty folks wearing them, they do last and their a better moc then the Minnetonka, in my humble opinion.

Arrowmoc does make some fine mocs. My choice in order would be.
1. Sport Moc- It is great for bowhunters. Has a better sole grip for the forest floor. Less apt to slip on rocks, grass etc.
2. Bush Boot- Very strong and long lasting. Slick sole can make you fall easily though.
3. French Canadian-Very nice re-enactors moc. Was a favorite for a lot of the Northerners well into the 20 th Century. Here again smooth sole for slipping.

I have worn all three of these styles in the past. As a bowhunter I would pick the sport moc. As a re-enactor I'd go with the French Canadian. As for myself the last pair I made myself and used Pigskin hide for the soles. Better sole gripping. Hope this helps.

That is one thing fer sure, leather sole mocs, are like ice skates on leaves !
I wear center seam moosehide and I love e'm.
That Sport Moc. has the crepe soles and looks to be a very good moc for hunt'n in. I might invest in a pair myself. They look good too.

I really like my Russell Mocs. Very high quality!  I have two pair of Dwyers (spelling) and the Russell's are in a whole higher league.

Jeff, I use & like Carl Dyers moccasins  www.carldyers.com   I have a couple pairs & really like them except on pine needles & dry leaves. They act like skis then. They are very quiet, & you can get double soles & when they wear, which probably will take 2 years, I got almost 3 on mine & used them on asphalt most of the time they can be resoled. They are not cheap, but are very high quality. I wear them a lot in the summer & early hunting season. Frank

I have a pair of doubled-soled lace boots from Arrow Moc and love them.  I like some of the aspects of the Russell mocs better (double vamp mostly) but it's had to beat Arrow Moc on price.  I stopped by his shop before ordering and looked over everything.  The only thing I didn't like about the mukluc sport mocs were the suede uppers, but after talking with him a bit more now I think you could convince him to change those out.

I like the knee-high style. I like the idea of the extra protection against some of the pokey and bitey things found here, so perhaps the French-Canadian style. I don't have a ton of money to drop right now, had a bad accident almost a year ago so work comp just almost pays the bills right now.

 Thanx for the input guys.

Arrow mocs for sure. Dyer's sent me a pair of the wrong size and wouldn't do anything about it.
I have two pairs of arrows and they are a great moc.

STOBBER----thanks, thats what I needed to hear. I like the style and the comfort of the Minnies, just was worried about durability.

I've had a pair of Carl Dyers since 1992. I'd like to get another pair, but I can't wear these out.

www.russellmoccasin.com

Just received a pair of their "Russell Tracker" model. They are hand made to order. My wife had to measure 7 different points along my foot, ankle and calf. Also had to include a tracing of my feet. They only took a few weeks to get and they felt "broken in" the minute I put them on my feet.

Been wearing them around here the last few weeks but the real test will come next week during a javelina and hog hunt in south Texas. Look for a full review in the Summer '07 issue of The Bowyer's Journal.
