Don't dismiss the Bob Lee 54"er so quick. I shot a Dark Archer last year that was smooth and fsst at my 30" draw with no finger pinch at all. That was with a thick leather glove, not a tab

Take Shawns advice. I did, and couldnt be happier....

54" RER Arroyo is a smoker!!!
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,

Short bows don't necessarily stack any more than longer ones if the riser/limb ratio is maintained for smoothness.   The Kodiak Magnum doesn't stack till about 30"...although guys will tell you it does.  You must put them on a scale to see for sure.  Finger pinch is more of an issue with short bows, than is stacking.

If you want mass, get phenolic in the riser...don't go to a long riser or you will get a bow that isn't as smooth.

George,

Agree with you to a point, as a general rule riser to limb ratio is the general rule in maintaining a stack free short bow, but this can be tweeked by adding a static tip and changing limb tapers, which does allows the bow to change from a draw to a compression. A bow which is forced into compression can have a longer riser with shorter limbs, and still get the smoothness of a longer bow. Finger pinch is not as much of an issue either as the string angle changes under these conditions. Also, riser mass is not a critical in stablizing a static recurve as the limb angle assures the nock to nock point is closer to the shooter's arm. This action stabilizes the bow without the need for center weight. Just another point of view in trying to achieve what Mike is after.

Brent is right on and George i have scaled several Kodiak mags and have to disagree with you. I have a lefty 45#er right now and it is dead on the money at 28"s but goes to 49#s at 29"s and 53 almost 54#s at 30"s. I believe the static tips mak e auge difference as my 54" Arroyo gains 3#s per inch all the way to 31"s it is 52#s at 28"s and only a tad over 60#s at 31"s. Shawn

Interesting guys.  The two K-Mags I did force draws on didn't show stacking effect until 30"; just goes to show yah.   I'll defer to the bowmakers when it comes to the gozintos 8^).

Ask the bowyer where the bow stacks,or look at the draw curves.
If you have a short draw like me they are all good at my draw length of 27".
Shooting 3 under gets rid of that nasty finger pinch also.

I love short bows, and there are lots to choose from.
Brent's Sheepeater is a dandy!!super light weight, silent and quick, I like the obsidian best of his choices.
Another one to look at that I have been shooting is the 52" Toelke recurve, Nice, real nice.

I have several short bow reviews on my site, and more on the way that may be of help.  www.peteward.com    click trad reviews.

I think that short bows get an undeserved bad rap. If you shoot in cramped quarters, blinds, and thick stuff, they can't be beat.
