using non COI BHds

Anyone use non-cut on impact BHds? like regular muzzys or thunderheads, out of their trad bow?

I did on a couple of turkeys, someone gave them to me because of the weight, I had no problems with turkeys except they went sailing right on through and down to the bottom of the canyon. the turkeys went down fast. Never tried them on anything else, wouldn,t be afraid of them on deer but I have enough snuffers, bears and zwickeys to hold me over this year I hope,

On deer they are probably fine, especially if you are using a bow that sends a fairly heavy arrow with some speed.  Plenty have been used in the past.   I think there is agreement that you may get a bit less penetration as compared to a COI, but......

Thanks yall, I just found some 125 muzzy three blades from previous years. I have some COI BHds but man those old muzzys are SHARP!

Dont like the thought of less penetration though,

You can sharpen the trocar tip on a muzzy to make it a COI head. Mark Land from Muzzy uses them on everything including Bear and Elk.

my first elk was killed with  a 125g thunderhead on a 2315 easton classic at 30 yards feathers where on one side bh sticking out the other side,double lung she went about 50 yrds an piled up out of a 65 lb brackenberry

I use Muzzy's on deer and hogs with carbons and have no problem with penetration. I do sharpen the tip to where it cuts on impact. I still use a two blade with my wood arrows and also like the Muzzy Phantoms. That may be the broadhead I start using the most as it just blew straight thru my last hog. I shoot 65# bows and really don't have a problem with penetration.

I only shot one deer with a recurve and a non-COI head. It was a 3-blade Thunderhead and blew right on through, actually blowing a chunk out of the off-side upper leg bone on the exit side.

If I remember correctly, Dal Lowry used to kill all his animals with mid-weight stickbows and Thunderheads.

The dogmatic belief that COI broadheads are a must for Trad is based more on nostalgia than anything else. COI are great, but modern design replaceable blade broadheads work just peachy too...

A Thunderhead or Muzzy will work just fine out of stickbows on the animals most bowhunters hunt.For someone that has trouble sharpening broadheads they might even be the best choice over some broadheads.I prefer the more traditional COC heads myself but not because the others will not work just fine.jmo
