Widow vs. Arrowdynamic Shafts
« on: June 30, 2008, 08:15:00 AM »
Help,

Just starting to work up some arrows for the new widow and I’m having a brain fart. Here is the set up. Black Widow PSAX 55# at 28" and i pull it to 29, so about 58#? The arrows are Arrowdynamic trad heavies cut to 31 1/2 inches with the regular inserts and 145 grain field points.

I just started to bare shaft and my arrows are hitting the target with the nock to the left of the point of impact and a little knock high. I had started out with a cut shaft, should I try a longer shaft? Change my point weight? I purchased 2 dozen of these before trying them and I would like to make them work? Anyone else have a similar set up with some advice?

Anyone know the recommended brace height of for the widow?
I know they sell weighted tips but how heavy can you get?

I would read O.L. Adcock's bareshaft tuning page on the A&H website. A lot of people have used this technique with great success.

Here is the link:

Hope this helps.

Bill, I'd really load up the front end....225-300gr.  The Trad Heavies are rated up to 70#, so you'll probably be able to handle as much weight as you can fit up front...and they'll fly a lot better for you, IMO

are you right handed. To start with i would try to see the nock in flight not after inpact. If you are right handed nock left in flight is weak spine. I dont know any thing about the trad heavies but at 58# and a 31.5" shaft out of the PSA you would need a 2216(might still be weak)  or 2219 alum. once you get it close with inflight bare shaft then switch to OL Adcock method (bear shaft and fletch shafts point of inpact) this system has worked great with my PSA.

I shoot a PSA V 53# @ 30", 32" 2216 or 2219 works for me

I agree that the spine appears weak, so dropping back to 125 gr point and/or cutting a bit off the arrow at a time may stiffen enough for good flight.

Also, shoot with your broadhead to confirm.  Hope this helps and good luck.

I shoot the AD heavies from my 50# at 27" SA, but arrows are cut to 29" and I get perfect flight.  Points are also 145 gr.

I shoot a 62lb PSA @ 27 and had to go up to a 29inch 2219 with a 225 tip.

If you have a good place to shoot put a big three blade broadhead on those arrows and shoot a couple- you will know real quick if they are weak.

i had a time with my 1st set of trad lites.called the man in kansas.he told me cutting the shafts from the front end does not stiffen the spine.its when you cut them from the nock end.you can only do this so much as the taper gets bigger and nocks won't fit.i had to change tabs to get real good flight.these shoot out to 20yds perfect (bare shafts):29 3/8in.52@28in draw.i shoot the same specs on trad heavys on a 60 lb bow.

Thats different.  Most on this site recommend the shafts be cut from point side.  Hopefully one of the long time users of ADs will step in and give thier recommended tuning process for first time users.

I have found fletched ADs to preform very differently from bareshafts.  so I tend to favor tuning fletched shafts with broadheads following OLs method rather than bareshaft.

I used a 125g field point last night and it made it better.Better arrow flight and i was using better form. I want to use a larger, heavier set up in the front. Maybe 50 g insert and a 150g broad head,do you guys think it would still fly nice?

SEE- so if cutting does not stiffen the spine i should cut them to the length i want and have adjust with point weight?

Thanks for all the replys.i'll keep you up-dated with progress.Who sells the brass/steel inserts?

doeboy, it is almost impossible to bareshaft tune how you are unless the material you shoot in is perfectly consistent. Try OLs method at 15 yards. I would cut them to 30.5"s and try 225 grains uop front. They should fly well out of most set-ups from 55-65#s that way. I have seen to many peoples great arrow flight to know ya have to experiment yourself, but from the guys who shoot the AD Heavies they say they will fly out of most bows above 55#s with point weights 175 grains and up. Cutting the shaft from point end does stiffen it. Cutting the shaft from nock end stiffens it faster than point end. I always cut from point end or nock will not fit.
