I'd seal the backs. If you leave the bark on you usualy have no problems. But if you remove it you could get a crack. The idea is to alow moisture only one way to escape. Sealing it up slows the drying process so you don't get the rapid shrinking.  As soon as you can get something on the backs. Like I said I use shellac (from home depot) and spray it good with several coats. It also has the advantage of being clear so you can see the grain.

Well the rain is coming so I won't be doing any ruffing today. Tomorrow should be a better day to work on bows.... If I get 2 bows out of all the staves I'll be happy. If not, O-well I'll learn something then.
