feather chopper shapes and noise
« on: July 03, 2008, 01:05:00 PM »
Has anyone tried the T-Hawk or 3R Swift choppers from 3 Rivers?  Looking for a different style feather but I'm concerned with feather noise, these will be used for hunting. Shoot 5.5" hi back shields now and they sound like Saturn Missles.
Thanks

Dave...off topic but what is the origin of your last name?  Mine is the same and I was told it was from Holland.

Any deviation from the parabolic shape starts to cause wind turbulence.  The more of it the louder the arrows flight.

Wow...BAK, you read the thread on EFOC and small fletching yet???

 http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=057257;p=36

I think there are some fluid dynamic types lurking about that get into all sorts of discussions that make my brain sweat... but the A&A (Adcock and Ashbey)design is a right angle, straight back...severe taper like a right angle triangle...supposedly, if I'm reading it right...the square back has the least turbulance or something... at least the least amount of "drag" (?)

There are some folks slowly testing fletch designs in flight with some cool sound recording equipment...but tis a slow go as they can only get the sound lab one night per month or something.

We all might learn some neat new stuff as it unfolds. :)

Dave..I shoot a Black Widow recurve and a Pronghorn long bow. If I shoot a shield cut feather, it sounds like a bird flapping. If I shoot a parabolic, it is silent. Just passing it along for whatever it is worth. Cotton

Mike, my ancestry comes from central Germany, but there are Huffs all over the world.  Cottonwood, I normally shoot 5" shields and they are dead quiet out of my Assenheimer.  I switched to big broadheads (WW) and thought I needed a big feather to steer it. The 3R Swift cut looks like a low profile shield and the T-Hawk seems to be a cross between a Para and a shield.  I hate to go and drop 23 bucks + shipping on a chopper that will make a tornado sounding feather.  The design looks cool, and that's half the fun of making arrows, it to have something that looks cool. But then there is practical,  I ordered 5" shields today from 3 Rivers .  If the feather shape turns out to be something good then I'll get one. I guess there is but one way to find out, try it.

I have the Swift 5.5" chopper. I like the looks of the fletch and they steer my heavy doug fir shafts with WW heads quite nicely!

I shoot the 5.5 shield chopper from Kustom King and they are super quiet. Make sur you get the same as your helical except with banana cut or they might make noise. I made the mistake of getting a right chopper with my left helical and I thought a 747 was coming in. Some say it doesn't make a difference but it did with me. I suppose the manufacturer makes a right and left for a reason.IMHO. I shoot Snuffers with them and they shoot great.

I modified the Raptor choppers by gluing a skewer sticks next to the guide(I think it was Shaun's idea)to make much smaller fletches-low profile shields and bananas. The arrows fly quietly and my broadheads are every bit as accurate as before.
