Hunting Arrow Weight Q?
« on: July 04, 2008, 08:23:00 PM »
So I got into the traditional thing back in January. I didn't get a lot of practicing in until May during the break between spring & summer semesters. But once summer classes started I completely forgot about a nagging question I have.

The arrows I'm currently using are 29in & 460 grains including a 100 g head. Comming off a 45# bow is that going to be enough weight to take down game such as deer and hogs? What are y'alls recomendations?

I ask cuz I've heard that most trad hunters like 500-700 grains of arrow weight, but I haven't heard if that is total weight w/ a B/H or just arrow weight.

Thanks

Well I think putting the arrow in the right place takes first in importance but it should be enough weight. I have a 42 # longbow and am shooting 700 gr arrows but then thats just me.

Want to do some interesting reading on the subject of arrow weight and broadhead penetration, read Dr Ashby's report on this site.

That will be fine for deer and even hogs but for hogs make it close and quartering away. 9-10 gpp. of draw weight is fine. As an example 3 years ago I shot a 110# doe with a 42#(at my draw)Widow and my total arrow weight was 340 grains, so just a tad over 8gpp. I got a complete pass-thru broadside at 15 yards. Shawn

For deer, that will be fine with just about any broadhead.  For hogs, I'd go a bit heavier on the arrow and a 2 blade BH.  They are tough SOB's and not as easy to penetrate as a deer.

I have always though an arrow in the 450 to 500gn range was perfect for deer and hogs in bows of your weight.Just match your broadhead size to what you are shooting. The lighter my arrow the smaller my broadhead has always worked just fine.

Thanks for the replies y'all.

I was going to switch broadheads this year anyways, probably to a soild two blade. I choose a replaceable blade type last year without giving much thought to the cost of replacement blades.

Generally I would pass on a hog over 100 pounds with that set up.

mount you some grizzlys on your arrows and you should be ok.  just make sure you hit a soft spot.

You'll go right through deer and hogs with a cut on contact broadhead....just make a good accurate shot.
