1st time tab user...I need help.
« on: July 07, 2008, 09:03:00 PM »
Bought a tab today and shot about 20 arrows with it today.   My accuracy was fine but I had a problem.   My ring finger took a beating from my string no matter how I adjusted the tab.   My question is....do any particular tabs give greater protection to the ring finger than others?   BTW, I shoot split finger and the tab I used today had calf hair and a spacer.   Any feedback GREATLY appreciated!   Thanks, Skychief.

I just switched to a tab and I finally tried  the saunders pak tab.  I has a slick plastic instead of calf hair.  It has different layers you can change out to give it different thickness.  I settled on 3 layers the back is leather, middle is harder plastic, and the front is a slick more bendable plasctic/rubber type material.  Oh and it has a spacer too.

Very slick, great support for fingers, and very comfortable.  Never had a problem with it hurting my fingers like I have with calf hair tabs.

Even though it has 3 layers, you can still feel the string, and it does not feel too  bulky.

just my 2 cents

My ring finger will swell and turn white, at the outside edge of the pad, but it's 'cause I torque the string.

Skychief,

I had that same problem, I tried bandaging up but it still hurt and my shooting suffered. I ended up pulling the inner layer out a bit and gluing it in place with tear grease ( canvas and leather glue great for tent repair, or blue jeans) wraps around my ring finger now and works great.

John,

What is "tear grease" and where can you get it? I tried Googling it and could not find it anywhere.

Thanks,
Allan

Actually the callus on the ring finger typically comes from the elbow too high, which normally is indicative of inadequate back tension.. Try pinching the shoulder blades a bit tighter and getting the elbow down and inline with your bow arm.

I also get a large callous on my ring finger from shooting with a tab.  I started cutting my own from leather a few years ago and modified the shape to fit me.  My tabs now look much different than the standard tab you purchase.  I can also use different thicknesses of leather depending on the time of year and how much shooting I am doing. By the time seasons start I really do not even need a tab.  Try cutting your own and shaping it to your particular shooting style.

I just use a good leather tab with no spacers and have no trobles. I always found the spacers pinched.
