need arrow finishing help fast
« on: July 13, 2008, 05:05:00 PM »
i have a little dipper gasket dipper and i was treying to crown dip[ my arrows but none of the paint is staying on. am i not supposed to use the gasket part for crown dipping with colored laquer? is it just for the clear finishing laquer? i just need to know the process i go in and how to do it. i have all bohning products. i just dont want to ruin the $250 worth of arrows ive bought. i previously only shot plain stained and finish laquered arrows. any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank You All

I don't use the gasket system, but if it was me I'd only use the gasket for the finish clear coats.

The gasket method is not for crown dipping yyour color, only for the clear finish before and after your crown and cresting.

To the best of my knowledge Bohning lacquers are not meant for the gasket system. There is gasket lacquer made for that purpose

To answer your other questions-yes crown dip, crest and finish coats, in that order, with proper drying time between.

Never used gasket system, just dip tubes and never had a problem. I apply a thin coat then a second thicker coat and allow 4 hrs of dry time in between, especially on humid days. Add the crest last, fletch and shoot.

There is colored gasket Laq. I have seen it in 3Rivers catalog. Is this the colored laq. you are refering to? If not crown dip, crest, and put the clear gasket laq. over the top. I have been doing this lately with no problems. I use Ducco to put the feathers on with.
I have had a few problems with gasket laq., it must be warm to apply. It will wear off after repeated hits in 3-D's and bales. I have redipped these arrows up to the crest line and use them for pratice.

I stain my cedar shafts different stains.  Then I clear the arrows first.  Dip them twice.  I use plain high gloss polyurenthe.  Takes a day or two just to do the clear.  Then I do my crowing or whatever painting on the arrow last.

I use the gasket system and here's a few tips.

If you want to dip the crown do it last, and do not use a gasket.  I have a short dip tube for crown  only. I also use the Bohning crown laquer/paint whatever it's called.

On wood arrows I do not crown with a laquer or paint.  I stain the crown on. I use water based analin dyes for the stain. Then after two/three coats of gasket laquer, I add the crest of my choice using Bohning cresting laquer.  Allow at the very least 24 hours for drying, 48 hrs is better. Do one more coat of the gasket laquer, and you are ready for fletching.
Damn Nice guy
